Moulton & Milligan — Vocabulary of the Greek NT
πιέζω [page 512]
πιέζω (see s.v. πιάζω ) is found in Luk_6:38 with the original meaning press down : cf. Mic_6:15 πιέσεις ἐλαίαν , and Syll 422 (= .3 904) .7 (iv/A.D.) μ ]ήτε ὁ βουλόμενος κεχρῆσθαι δι᾽ ἄγνοιαν [ὑπ ]ὸ τῆς ἀπειρίας πιεζείσθω . In ib. 587 .304 (B.C. 329 8) the subst. πιεστήρ , which Dittenberger says means elsewhere torcular vel prelum , seems to have the force of μοχλός ( crowbar ), but the root meaning of pressing is still preserved. Πιέζω contains a reduced form of ἐπί and ἕζομαι : cf. πινυτός from ἐπί and the root of νό ϝος (Boisacq Dict. Etym. pp. 782, 785).
