πίναξ, πίνακος, ὁ (common thought to be from ΠΙΝΟΣ a pine, and so properly, 'a pine-board'; according to the conjecture of Buttmann, Ausf. Spr. i. 74 n., from πναξ for πλάξ (i. e. anything broad and flat (cf. English plank)) with ἰ inserted, as in πινυτός for πνυτος (according to Fick i. 146 from Sanskritpinaka, a stick, staff)), from Homer down;
1. a board, a tablet.

originally = board, plank, as e.g. in Syll 537 (= .3 969) .83 (B.C. 347 6) ἐπὶ τούτων ἐπιθήσει πίνακας συνκολλήσας . Hence anything flat , as a tablet, a disc, and later a dish as in Mat_14:8 al. : cf. P Tebt I. 112 .51 (accounts B.C. 112) ἄρτου κ̄ε̄ , πίνα (κος ) ε̄ , and BGU III. 781 v. 16 (i/A.D.) πίναξ μέγας ἐν θήκῃ . For πίναξ , a votive tablet, cf. Headlam Herodas p. 181 f.
