31.87 · Hold a View, Believe, Trust · Trust, Rely
faithful, trustworthy, dependable, reliable (derivative of πιστεύω[b] ‘to trust,’ 31.85) pertaining to being trusted Since πιστός[b] is a type of passive derivative of πιστεύω[b], it may be necessary in a number of languages to render this passive relationship in an active form. For example, the phrase δοῦλε ἀγαθὲ καὶ πιστέ in MAT 25:21 may be rendered as ‘good servant and one whom I can trust.’ In 2TI 2:11 the phrase πιστὸς ὁ λόγος may be rendered as ‘this is a saying we can have confidence in’ or ‘... that we can trust.’

31.103 · Hold a View, Believe, Trust · Be a Believer, Christian Faith
Collocation: πιστή
believer, Christian, one who has Christian faith (derivative of πιστεύω[c] ‘to be a believer,’ 31.102) one (female) who believes in Jesus Christ
1 πιστή has also been treated in 11.17 as a name for a member of the Christian constituency. This is a good instance of complete overlapping in that the same term may be classified in two quite distinct ways, one based on group membership and the other based upon the type of belief which results in such membership. It would be possible, therefore, to indicate that in the case of πιστή[b] (= πιστός[e]) in 11.17 there is an added component of group identification, but one may also argue that such a feature of meaning is derived essentially from the context. 2 ACT 16:1 πιστή may also be regarded as a derivative of πιστεύω[c] to be a believer (31.102), but NT usage in a passage such as ACT 16:1 seems to focus more upon group adherence than upon the actual state of believing. Moulton & Milligan — Vocabulary of the Greek NT
πιστός. For πιστός, ‘‘ faithful,” ‘‘ trustworthy,” as generally in the NT, cf. P Grenf II. 7312 (late iii/A.D.) (= Selections, p- 118) τ]αύτην παραδέδωκα τοῖς καλοῖς kal πιστοῖς ἐξ αὐτῶν τῶν νεκροτάφων εἰς τήρησιν, “1 have handed her over to the good and faithful men among the grave-diggers themselves that they may take care of her” (cf. Mt 2574), and P Oxy I. 4159 (iii/iv A.D.) ἁγνοὶ πιστοὶ σύνδικοι, “true and trustworthy advocates.” In a deed of sale of a slave, published by Eitrem (S#/avenkauf, Christiania, 1916), the slave is described as 27 πιστοῦ kal adpdcrov, ‘faithful and not given to running away.’’ A petitioner for release from prison οὕνεκα Tod θεοῦ kal τοῦ καλῶς ἔχοντος, “in the name of God and of fair play,’’ describes himself, P Petr II. 19(1a)4, as δοὺς τὰ πιστά, with reference apparently to certain required ‘‘ pledges”: cf. BGU IV. 115276 (B.C. 10) οὗ τὰ] πιστὰ (reading almost certain—Ed.) πα[ρ]έδωκεν. On the rare active use of πιστός, ‘‘ trusting,” “ believing,” which occurs first apparently in the NT (Gal 3°, 2 Cor 6", and sexzes in the Pastorals), see Hort ad 1 Pet 121, where the usage is explained by the predominant sense of πίστις, ‘faith,’ ‘‘trust.” It may be added that in 1 Cor 77% Lietzmann (HZN7T ad 1.) understands πιστός as = ‘‘ Christian,” with the meaning ‘‘I give my decision in accordance with my best Christian consciousness.”” Te quotes in support a number of Syrian inscrr. where πιστός is used as a title. For Πίστος (note change of accent) as a common name for slaves, see the citations in Headlam Herodas, p. 329. For adv. πιστῶς, cf. P Lond 3017 (A.D. 138-161) (= 11. p. 256) πιστῶς καὶ ἐπιμελῶς, P Oxy IX. 118718 (A.D. 254) ὑγιῶς καὶ πιστῶς.
