πλείων, πλείονος, ὁ, ἡ, neuter πλεῖον (eighteen times) and (in Luk_3:13; (Joh_21:15 L T Tr WH); Act_15:28) πλέον (cf. (WHs Appendix, p. 151); Matthiae, i., p. 333; Krüger, § 23, 7, 4; Kühner, § 156, 3; Passow, under the word πολύς, B. 1; (Liddell and Scott, under the word, B.)), plural πλείονες and contracted πλείους, accusative πλείονας and contracted πλείους (which forms are used indiscriminately in the N. T.), neuter πλείονα and (L T Tr WH in Mat_26:53; L T in Luk_21:3) contracted πλείω; (comparitive of πολύς); more, i. e.
1. greater in quantity: the object with which the comparison is made being added in the genitive, as πλείονας τῶν πρώτων, more in number than the first, Mat_21:36; πλεῖον (or πλείω) πάντων, more than all, Mar_12:43; Luk_21:3; πλείονα ... τούτων, more than these, Joh_7:31 (here L T Tr WH omit the genitive (see below)); πλείονα τῶν πρώτων, more than the first, Rev_2:19; πλεῖον τούτων, more than these, Joh_21:15; (πλείονα τιμήν ἔχειν τοῦ οἴκου, Heb_3:3 b (cf. Winer's Grammar, 190 (178), 240 (225))); περισσεύειν πλεῖον, more than, followed by a genitive (A. V. exceed), Mat_5:20. πλείονες (πλείους) ἤ, Mat_26:53 R G (L πλείω (br. ἤ)); Joh_4:1 (Tr marginal reading omits; WH brackets ἤ). πλεῖον ἤ, more than, Luk_9:13; πλέον πλήν with a genitive Act_15:28; πλέον παρά (τί or τινα (see παρά, III. 2 b.)), Luk_3:13; (Heb_3:3 a); ἤ is omitted before numerals without change of construction: ἐτῶν ἦν πλειόνων τεσσαράκοντα ὁ ἄνθρωπος, Act_4:22; οὐ πλείους εἰσιν μοι ἡμέραι δεκαδύο, Act_24:11 (here Rec. inserts ἤ); ἡμέρας οὐ πλείους ὀκτώ ἤ δέκα (Rec. πλείους ἤ δέκα), Act_25:6; add, Act_23:13; Act_23:21; as in Greek writings after a neuter: πλείω (Lachmann ἤ in brackets) δώδεκα λεγεῶνας, Mat_26:53 (T Tr WH (but T λεγιωνων)) (πλεῖν Attic for πλεῖον ἑξακοσίους, Aristophanes av. 1251; ἔτη γεγονώς πλείω ἑβδομήκοντα, Plato, Apology Socrates, p. 17 d.; see ἤ, 3 a.; on the omission ofquam in Latin afterplus andamplius, cf. Ramshorn, Latin Gram., p. 491; (Roby, Latin Gram. § 1273)). the objects with which the comparison is made are not added because easily supplied from the context: Joh_4:41; (Joh_7:31 (see above)); ; Heb_7:23; τό πλεῖον, the more (viz., the greater debt mentioned), Luk_7:43; πλεῖον, adverbially, more, i. e. more earnestly, Luk_7:42; ἐπί πλεῖον, more widely, further, διανέμεσθαι, Act_4:17; (cf. Act_20:9 WH marginal reading (see below)); προκόπτειν, 2Ti_3:9; ἐπί πλεῖον ἀσεβείας, 2Ti_2:16; ἐπί πλεῖον, longer (than proper), Act_20:9 (not WH marginal reading (see above)); Act_24:4; plural πλείονα, more, i. e. a larger reward, Mat_20:10 (but L Tr WH πλεῖον); without comparison, used of an indefinite number, with a substantive: Act_2:40; Act_13:31; Act_18:20; Act_21:10; Act_24:17; Act_25:14; Act_27:20; Act_28:23; neuter περί πλειόνων (A. V. of many things), Luk_11:53; with the article οἱ πλείονες (πλείους), the more part, very many: Act_19:32; Act_27:12; 1Co_9:19; 1Co_10:5; 1Co_15:6; 2Co_2:6; 2Co_4:15; 2Co_9:2; Php_1:14.
2. greater in quality, superior, more excellent: followed by the genitive of comparison, Mat_6:25; Mat_12:41-42; Mar_12:33 (here T WH Tr text περισσότερον); Luk_11:31-32; Luk_12:23; (πλείονα θυσίαν ... παρά Κάϊν, Heb_11:4 (see παρά, as above). From Homer down.)

Moulton & Milligan — Vocabulary of the Greek NT
πλείων [page 517]
P Rev L l. .12 (B.C. 258) τοῦ πλείονος καὶ τοῦ ἐλάσσονος κατὰ λόγον , for more or less in proportion, P Petr II. 38( b ) .2 (iii/B.C.) πλείονος τιμῆς , at a higher price, PSI VI. 617 .7 (iii/B.C.) ἵνα μὴ εἰς πλείονα ἀνηλώ [ματ ]α ἐμπίπτω , P Lille I. 26 .3 (iii/B.C.) (= Witkowski .2 , p. 49) ἡ κώμη ἔρημος διὰ τὸ πλείω χρόνον μὴ βεβρέχθαι , and P Oxy I. 41 .5 (iii/iv A.D.) ἐπὶ σοῦ τὰ ἀγαθὰ καὶ πλέον γίνεται , under you our blessings increase ever more (Edd.), acclamation to a prytanis at a public meeting.
Adverbial phrases are P Giss I. 47 .10 (time of Hadrian) ἀντὶ πλείονος , under its value, P Ryl II. 65 .15 (B.C. 67 ?) ἐπὶ πλεῖον , BGU I. 282 .29 (after A.D. 175) ἐπὶ ̣τ̣ο ̣πλεῖον ἢ ἔλασσον , and PSI V. 514 .5 (B.C. 252 1) σπούδασον μάλιστα μὲν πρὸ πλείονος , εἰ δὲ μή , τό γ᾽ ἐλάχιστον πρὸ τριῶν ἡμερῶν ἐν Ἀλεξανδρείαι καταστ [ῆναι ? For the meaning several, which is found in the phrase (ἐπὶ ) πλείους ἡμέρας ( quater in Ac), we may compare P Ryl II. 65 .9 (B.C. 67 ?) πλείονα σώματα , several corpses. For πλέον ἔλαττον , plus minus , cf. BGU IV. 872 .1 (Byz.).
The indeclinable πλείω in Mat_26:53 ΰ BD (cf. Blass Gr. p. 108) can be paralleled from P Oxy II. 274 .6 (A.D. 89 97) πρὸς ὧι κεκλήρωται . . . πλείω πήχεις ἐννέα τέταρτον ὄγδοον registration of property. As regards spelling Mayser ( Gr. i. p. 69) has shown that πλείων has progressively ousted πλέων in B.C. papyri. The marked preponderance of the ει form in the NT (cf. WH Notes .2 , p. 158) shows that in this particular our uncials faithfully represent their originals. In MGr a double comparative form πλειότερος is used, while πλέον (still used in the written language) takes the forms πλέο , πλιό , πιό .
