Ramsay ( Paul , p. 343) points out that Πόπλιος ( Act_28:7 f. ) is the Greek form of the praenomen Publius, and that though it is not usual that an official should be called by his praenomen simply, Publius may have been so well known among the peasantry that Luke adopted their familiar mode of addressing him.
