Hicks (CR i. p. 44) has drawn attention to the fact that πρεσβεία, ‘the office of ambassador,” was ‘‘in everyday use in the intercourse between the Greek cities, and between them and the kings’: this gives fresh point to its use in Lk 148%, 19. See further s.v. πρεσβεύω, and for πρεσβεία = “intercession,” cf. P Oxy VIII. 115199 (v/a.p. 2) εὔχεσθαι πρεσβίαις τῆς δεσποίνης ἡμῶν τῆς θεοτόκου, ‘* pray through the intercession of our lady the mother of God.
