Hdt.down]; to stretch Sorth, stretch out: ὡς προέτειναν [ Rec. -νεν] αὐτὸν τοῖς ἱμᾶow, when they had stretched him out for the thongs i.e. to receive the blows of the thongs, (by tying him up to a beam or a pillar; for it appears from vs. 29 that Paul had already been bound), Acts xxii. 25 [W. § 31 init. ; al. (cf. R. V. txt.) ‘with the thongs’ (cf. iuas) ].

προτείνω. In Ac 2255, its only occurrence in the NT, this verb seems to be used not of binding or tying with thongs (AV, RV), but rather of ‘stretching forward” with thongs, so as to cause a tense posture for receiving blows (see Field Vo/es, p- 136) : cf. P Leid W*"t 85. (ii/iii A.p.) (=IL. p. 145) is τὸν βορρᾶ (/. els τὸν βορρᾶν) τὴν play πὺξ (1. πυγμὴν) προτί(= εὔνας, *‘ versus septemtrionem unum pugnum extendens.” For the derived meaning ‘‘ put forward,” ‘‘ propose,” cf. P Par 631%! (B.c. 164) (=P Petr III. p. 32) ἀσμενῶς ἐπιδέξασθαι τὸ προτεινόμενον, ‘to receive what is proposed cheerfully ” (Edd.), and OG/7S 315°° (B.c. 164-159) xA@pos δ᾽ εὐτονώτατος ἦν τὰ Ρωμαϊκὰ προτείνων kal οὐθενὶ τρόπωι συμβουλεύων οὐθὲν ἄνευ ᾽κείνων πράσσειν.
