πυρρός, literally ‘‘red as fire” (cf. 4 Kingd 332), is applied in t milder sense of ‘‘ruddy” to a witness to a will, P Petr 13(2)!2 (B.c. 237). In P Leid Wi 48 (ii/iii A.D.) we ha ποίσον(-- ποίησον) ὑπποπόταμω(-- ον ἐκ κηροῦ πυρρε and in P Oxy VI. 9228 (vi/vii A.D.) ὑπὲρ τοῦ πυρροῦ ἵππ (cf. Rev 6*). The double pp is preserved in the LXX a NT as in the papyri, cf. BGU II. 4688 (a.p. 150) καμήλ ἄρρενος πυρροῦ, and see Mayser Gr. p. 221. It may noted that πυρ(ρ)ός and πυρ(ρ)άζω drop a p in Mt 16°C a late uncials, Rev 64 APO46, 123 CO46: see Moulton Gr p- 101. For the form πυρράκης, as in 1 Kingd 16%, cf. P Petr 148° (B.c. 237), and see Mayser Gr. p. 455; and for πυρρ xpous cf. P Ryl Il. 1342° (A.D. 34) ts τοκὰς ἐπίτοκος πυρρ Xpovs, ‘‘a brood-sow about to litter, tawny-colourec (Edd. ).
