ἀνθύπατος, ἀνθυπάτου, ὁ (see the preceding word), proconsul: Act_13:7-8; Act_13:12; Act_18:12 L T Tr WH; Act_19:38. The emperor Augustus divided the Roman provinces into senatorial and imperial. The former were presided over by proconsuls; the latter were administered by legates of the emperor, sometimes called also propraetors. (Polybius, Dionysius Halicarnassus, Lucian, Plutarch, and often in Dio Cassius) (B. D. under the word ; Alex.'s Kitto under the word Province; especially Lightfoot in The Contemp. Rev. for 1878, p. 280f.)

ἀνθύπατος [page 44] Syll 656 .2 (ii/A.D.) presents Gaius Papillius Carus Pedo ἀνθύπατος replying to a resolution of the Ephesian Βουλή , who had referred him to his predecessors practice (τοὺς πρὸ ἐμ [οῦ ] κρατίστους ἀνθυπάτονς ). Ib. 316 .8 (ii/B.C.) has Q. Fabius Q. f. Maximus, ἀνθύπατος Ῥωμαίων , addressing the authorities of a town in Achaia. So passim , except in Egypt : since this country was governed by a prefect, we do not hear of proconsuls in the papyri.
