large basket a large container made of woven material, usually grass or reeds; used for carrying a variety of things, including food and produce, and for moving soil from one place to another In the one context in which σαργάνη occurs (2CO 11:33), the basket was evidently rather large, since it was used to let Paul down from an opening in the wall of Damascus. It may very well have been made of braided ropes. In 2CO 11:33 the basket is called σαργάνη, while in ACT 9:25 the same basket is referred to as σπυρίς ({D:6.149).
1 Neither from NT contexts nor from extrabiblical usage can one determine precisely the differences in meaning between these three terms for baskets: σαργάνη (6.148), σπυρίς (6.149), and κόφινος (6.150).
