Thayer's Greek Lexicon
σκιά, σκιᾶς, ἡ ((see σκηνή, at the beginning)), from Homer down, the Sept. for φΕμ;
a. properly, shadow, i. e. shade caused by the interception of the light: Mar_4:32 (cf. Eze_17:23); Act_5:15; σκιά θανάτου, shadow of death (like umbra mortis, Ovid. metam. 5, 191, and umbra Erebi, Vergil Aen. 4, 26; 6, 404), 'the densest darkness' (because from of old Hades had been regarded as enveloped in thick darkness), tropically, the thick darkness of error (i. e. spiritual death; see θάνατος, 1): Mat_4:16; Luk_1:79 (from Isa_9:1, where φΗμΐξΘεΖϊ).
b. a shadow, i. e. an image cast by an object and representing the form of that object: opposed to σῶμα, the thing itself, Col_2:17; hence, equivalent to a sketch, outline, adumbration, Heb_8:5; opposed to εἰκών, the 'express' likeness, the very image, Heb_10:1 (as in Cicero, de off. 3, 17, 69nos veri juris solidam et expresssam effigiem nullam tenemus, umbra et imaginibus utimur).

Moulton & Milligan — Vocabulary of the Greek NT
σκιά [page 578]
shade, is used of the shadow on a sun-dial in Preisigke 358 .4 (iii/B.C.) μεθίσταται τὸ ἄκρον τῆς σκιᾶς ἐν ἡμέραις τριάκοντα . Other exx. of the word are P Oxy VIII. 1088 .43 (medical receipt early i/A.D.) ἐν τῆι σκιᾷ ξηράνας , dry in the shade, and OGIS 201 .20 (vi/A.D.) οὐκ ἀφῶ αὐτοὺς καθεσθῆναι εἰς τὴς σκιάν , εἰ μὴ (= ἀλλὰ ) ὑπὸ ἡλίου ἔξω .
In BGU IV. 1141 .41 (B.C. 13) Schubart thinks that σκιά is perhaps used in the sense of an umbrella, but Olsson ( Papyrusbriefe , p. 52) prefers the meaning a variegated border, as in Syll 653 (= .3 736) .20, .24 (B.C. 92) : cf. also P Oxy VI. 921 .15 (iii/A.D.) σινδόνια σκιωτά , cambrics with variegated borders rather than with shaded stripes, and the editors suggestion ad l. that σικιωτεν in P Tebt II. 413 .11 is perhaps for σκιωτόν .
With Heb_10:1 cf. Preisigke 344 Διόδωρος σκιὰν Ἀντιφίλου ἐποίησ [εν , and Vett. Val. p. 248 .22 with reference to a picture which shows σκιὰν ἔργου καὶ ἀληθείας . Preisigke ( Wφrterb. s.v. ) cites the amulet P Masp II. 67188 .5 (vi/A.D.) for σκιά = an evil spirit πα̣ρ [α ]ϕ̣υ̣λ̣αξόν με ἀπ̣ὸ παν̣τὸς π̣ονηροῦ πν (εύμ )ατος , ὑπόταξόν μο̣υ̣ πᾶν πν (εῦμ )α δαιμονίων φθειρ̣οποιῶν . . . καὶ πᾶσα̣ σκιά ( l. πᾶσαν σκιάν ).
For the verb σκιάζω cf. P Cornell 50 .10 (i/A.D.) ἵνα αἱ ἄμπελοι μὴ σκιάζωνται , and BGU I. 33 .14 (ii/iii A.D.) τὰ δὲ οἰνάρια σκίασον , ἐὰν καιρὸς γένηται . For σκιατροφέω see Musonius p. 59 .9 . The subst. σκιασμός occurs in Vett. Val. p. 210 .5 . MGr ἴσκιος , shade, shadow, has a prothetic vowel : cf. s.v. στῆθος .
