σπυρίς / σφυρίς [pages 586, 618]
σφυρίς , a basket, a creel. Though LS 8 pronounce σφυρίς an Attic spelling for σπυρίς , it is the regular form in the papyri as in the NT ( Mat_15:37 ; Mat_16:10 , Mar_8:8 ; Mar_8:20 , Act_9:25 ) : cf. Mayser Gr . i. p. 173, Crφnert Mem. Herc . p. 85 n. .3 . See e.g. P Cairo Zen I. 59013 .12 (B.C. 259) κόκκωνος σφυρίδες δ̄ , Ostr 1152 .3 (Ptol./Rom.) δύο σφυρίδων τῆς πίσση (ς ), P Ryl II. 127 .34 (A.D. 29) σφυρὶς ἐν ᾗ ἄρτο̣(ι ) ν̄ , a basket in which were fifty loaves, P Oxy I. 116 .19 (ii/A.D.) σφυρίδα φοίνικος καλοῦ , a basket of good dates, ib . For σπυρίς we can only cite P Par 62 v. 18 ( c . B.C. 170) τιμὴν σπυρίδων .
For the dim. σφυρίδιον see P Oxy X. 1293 .30 (A.D. 117 38) σφυρίδια δύο ἐσφρα (γισμένα ), cf. .39 , P Tebt II. 414 .19 (ii/A.D.) τὸ σφυρίδιν ( l . σφυρίδιον ) μετὰ τῶν ἐνόντων κάτω , the little basket with its contents at the bottom (Edd.), P Oxy VI. 936 .15 (iii/A.D.) σφυρίδιον Κανωπικὸν ὅπ̣ου ζεύγη ἄρτων δ̄ , a Canopic basket with 4 pairs of loaves, and ib . It should be noted that in a fragmentary papyrus leaf as published by Mahaffy in P Petr II. p. 33 and amended ib . III. 72( c ) .4 (= p. 202) we find σπυρίτων (= σπυρίδων ) for σπυριδίου . See also the form σφυρίον in P Oxy XIV. 1658 .6 (iv/A.D.) μεικρὸν σφυρίον .
