στάχυς, “‘an ear of corn” (Mt 121, αΖ.), is found several times in the farm accounts P Lond 131 ,vecfo #8. (a.p. 78-79) (=I. p. 184): cf. Aristeas 63 βοτρύων kal σταχύων, ‘vine clusters and corn-ears,” and M. Anton. vii. 40 βίον θερίζειν, ὥστε κάρπιμον στάχυν, ‘our lives are reaped like the ripe ears of corn.” For the acc. plur. στάχυας, as in Gen 417, Mt 121, see Thackeray Gr. i. p. 147. Mayser (Gr. i. p. 267) cites an instance of the acc. plur. στάχυς from a papyrus of B.C. 236. On the use of στάχυς in Judg 12°, see Plater Valgate Grammar, p. 13 n.2 ΜΟΥ στάχυν, or, with prothetic vowel, ἀστάχυ (a form that is found as early as Homer—//. ii. 148 ἄσταχυς). Among cognate words with meaning “‘ pointed,” Boisacq (p. 904) notes the English ‘‘ sting.
