to split, to tear to split or to tear an object into at least two parts In some languages the meaning of σχίζω in MRK 1:10 may be best expressed as ‘the sky tore’ or ‘there was a slit in the sky’ or possibly ‘there was suddenly an opening in the sky.’ The adverb ‘suddenly’ may provide some of the implications of the splitting involved in the verb σχίζω.
