ἀνάγαιον, , τό (from ἀνά and γαῖα i. e. γῆ), properly, anything above the ground; hence, a room in the upper part of a house: Mar_14:15; Luk_22:12 (in G L T Tr WH). Also written ἀνώγαιον (which Tdf. formerly adopted; cf. Xenophon, an. 5, 4, 29 (where Dindorf ἀνακείων)), ἀνώγεον (Rec.), ἀνώγεων; on this variety in writing cf. Lob. ad Phryn., p. 297f; (Rutherford, New Phryn., p. 358); Fritzsche on Mark, p. 611f; Buttmann, 13 (12); (WH's Appendix, p. 151).

This form of the word is supported by κατάγ (ε )ιον , P Oxy I. 75 .19 (A.D. 129), and VI. 911 .15 (iii/A.D.), 912 .12 ( ib. ); καταγαίῳ , P Lond 1164 ( e ) .8 (A.D. 212) (= III. p. 160), κατάγαια , P Oxy VI. 903 .4 (iv/A.D.), κατάκεον , P Rein 43 .9 (A.D. 102, illiterate). Τῶν ἀνωγαίων occurs at the end of vi/A.D., P Par 21 .3 , and ἀνώγιον in CPR 28 .16 (A.D. 110), after a lacuna : cf. MGr ἀνώγι upper storey.
