Quick Definition
a table for food or business
Strong's Definition
a table or stool (as being four-legged), usually for food (figuratively, a meal); also a counter for money (figuratively, a broker's office for loans at interest)
Derivation: probably contracted from G5064 (τέσσαρες) and G3979 (πεζῇ);
KJV Usage: bank, meat, table
Thayer's Greek Lexicon
τράπεζα, τραπέζης, ἡ (from τέτρα, and πέζα a foot), from Homer Idown, the Sept. for ωΛΡμΐηΘο, a table;
1.
a. a table on which food is placed, an eating-table: Mat_15:27; Mar_7:28; Luk_16:21; Luk_19:23; Luk_22:21; Luk_22:30; the table in the temple at Jerusalem on which the consecrated loaves were placed (see πρόθ??Ezr_1:1-11), Heb_9:2.
b. equivalent to the food placed upon the table (cf. Fritzsche on Additions to ): παρατιθέναι πραπεζαν (like the Latinmensam apponere (cf. our 'to set a good table')), to set a table, i. e., food, before one (Thucydides 1, 130; Aelian v. h. 2, 17), Act_16:34; διακονεῖν, ταῖς τραπέζαις (see διακονέω, 3), Act_6:2.
c. a banquet, feast (from Herodotus down): Rom_11:9 (from Psa_68:23 ()); μετέχειν τραπέζης δαιμονίων, to partake of a feast prepared by ((?) see below) demons (the idea is this: the sacrifices of the Gentiles inure to the service of demons who employ them in preparing feasts for their worshippers; accordingly one who participates in those feasts, enters into communion and fellowship with the demons); κυρίου, to partake of a feast prepared by ((?) see below) the Lord (just as when he first instituted the supper), 1Co_10:21 (but it seems more natural to take the genitives δαιμονίων and κυρίου simply as possessive (cf. Winers Grammar, 189 (178); Buttmann, § 127, 27), and to modify the above interpretation accordingly).
2. the table or stand of a money-changer, where he sits, exchanging different kinds of money for a fee (agio), and paying back with interest loans or deposits (Lysias, Isocrates, Demosthenes, Aristotle, Josephus, Plutarch, others): Mat_21:12; Mar_11:15; Joh_2:15; τό ἀργύριον διδόναι ἐπί (τήν) τράπεζαν, to put the money into a (the) bank at interest, Luk_19:23.

τράπεζα [page 639]
(1) a table, lit. four-footed (table) : P Eleph 5 .12 (B.C. 284 3) τράπεζα ᾱ , PSI IV. 391 40 (B.C. 242 1) τράπεζαν πυξίνην , a table made of box-wood, Chrest . (2) From the table at which the money-changers sat, τράπεζα came to mean a bank, as in Mat_21:12 , Luk_19:23 al .; P Eleph 27 .23 (iii/B.C.) . . τέ (λος ) τόπου ψιλ (οῦ ) τοῦ ὄντος ἐν Τεβτύ (νει ), Sokonopis has paid into the bank at Crocodilopolis to Heraclides the banker for the King the tax upon a vacant space situated at Tebtunis (Edd.), ib . 483 (A.D. 94) acknowledgment of a loan paid διὰ τὴς Ἀφροδισίου τραπέζης Φανη [σί ]ου , and P Tebt II. 294 .17 (A.D. 146) ἃς (δραχμὰς ) κ [αὶ ] διαγράψω κυρωθεὶς ἐπὶ τὴν ἐπὶ τόπων δημοσίαν τράπεζαν τοῖς συνήθεσι προθεσμίαις , which (drachmae) I will, as soon as my appointment is ratified, pay into the local public bank at the accustomed dates (Edd.). In P Fay 96 .4 (A.D. 122) a receipt is issued διὰ τῆς Σαραπίωνος τραπέζης stating that a certain payment had been made. As the payment was not in money but in kind ( oil ), this has led to the conjecture by Preisigke ( Girowesen , p. 222 that the τράπεζα may not have been an ordinary bank but a revenue-office (see Wilcken s note ad l . Chrest . I.P.372).
(3) For τράπεζα = nether-stone of a mill, see P Ryl II. 167 .12 (A.D. 39) μυλαῖον ἐνεργὸν ἐν ᾧ μύλοι Θηβαικοὶ τρεῖς σὺν κώπαις καὶ τραπέζαις , a mill in full working order, containing 3 Theban mill-stones, with handles and nether-stones, and the other exx. collected by the editors ad 1 .
