ὑπογραμμός, -ov, ὁ, (ὑπογράφω), prop. 1. a writing-copy, including all the letters of the alphabet, given to beginners as an aid in learning to draw them: Clem. Alex. strom. 5, 8, 50. Hence 2. an example set before one: 1 Pet. ii. 21 (2 Mace. ii. 28; Clem. Rom. 1 Cor. 16, 17; 33,8; [Philo, fragm. vol. ii. 667 Mang. (vi. 229 Richter) ], and often in eccl. writ.; ὁ Παῦλος ὑπομονῆς γενόμενος μέγιστος ὑπογραμμός, Clem. Rom. 1 Cor. 5, 7 [where see Bp. Lehtft.]).

ὑπογραμμός, “‘writing-copy,” and hence ‘‘ example” in 1 Pet 251], its only NT occurrence. We can cite no ex. of the word from our sources, but ὑπογραφή, and ὑπογράφω are very common, e.g. P Hib I. 511 (B.c. 245) ὑπογέγρίαπτα]γι τῆς... ἐπιστολῆς. . τἀντίγραφ[ον, followed by a copy of the letter, and P Goodsp Cairo 38 (iii/B.c.) (= Witkowski £/.* p. 47) Αἰγυπτιστὶ δὲ ὑπέγραψα, ὅπως ἀκριβῶς εἰδῆις, with Witkowski’s note, and the note by Wilcken in dArchzv iil. p- 113f. See also Deissmann 4S p. 250.
