ὕσσωπος (on the breathing see WH's Appendix, p. 144a; Lachmann (in both his editions) spells it with one sigma ς' in John), ὑσσώπου, ἡ, (Hebrew ΰΕζεα, Exo_12:22; Num_19:6; Num_19:18, etc.), hyssop, a plant a bunch of which was used by the Hebrews in their ritual sprinklings: Heb_9:19; ὑσσώπῳ, equivalent to καλάμῳ ὑσσώπου, Joh_19:29. In P Cairo Goodsp 30 xlii .8 (A.D. 191 2) ἱσσύπου ( l. ὑσσώπου ) (τετρώβολον ) the editor translates caper plant : cf. Heb_9:19 . In Joh_19:29 ὑσσώπῳ is probably a graphic error for ὑσσῷ , a pike, a javelin : see Field Notes , p. 106 ff.
