In his note on 1Co. 3:6 ( Notes , p. 187 f.) Lightfoot refers to the application by the Fathers of ἐφύτευσα to the work of educating the catechumens as a significant ex. of a general fault of patristic exegesis, the endeavour to attach a technical sense to words in the NT which had not yet acquired this meaning.
