plant (semantic derivative of χλωρός[a] ‘green,’ 79.34) In a number of languages it would seem redundant to speak of ‘green plants,’ since all plants are regarded as being green. It may therefore be more satisfactory to employ a rendering such as ‘nor any plant,’ referring in this instance to larger annual plants or bushes, in contrast with both grass and trees.
1 It is difficult to determine whether χλωρός should be regarded as having two different meanings or whether the meaning should be regarded as covering a range of color from light green through greenish yellow and greenish gray, but for the practical purposes of highlighting certain differences in color, two meanings of χλωρός are listed here (79.34 and 79.35). 2 REV 9:4 The Greek term χλωρόν (as a substantive) also occurs in non-New Testament contexts with a generic meaning of any kind of plant, thus being roughly equivalent to the meaning of φυτεία (3.1), but in REV 9:4 χλωρόν contrasts with χόρτον ‘grass’ and δένδρον ‘tree’ and thus evidently refers to larger annuals and smaller perennial plants.
