liar (derivative of ψεύδομαι ‘to lie,’ 33.253) one who utters falsehoods and lies Since lying is a universal, there is usually no difficulty in obtaining a satisfactory term for ‘liar,’ though frequently the equivalent is an idiomatic expression, for example, ‘to speak too much,’ ‘to speak with two tongues,’ or ‘to speak what is not one’s thoughts.’

ψευδής, “false,” ‘untrue’: P Cairo Zen II. 5914014 (B.c. 256) γνώριζε οὖν Κριτίαν γράφοντά σοι ψευδῆ, P Tebt I. 735 (B.C. 113-11) ἀνενηνέχθαι ἐν ψευ[δ]έσι, and BGU 111. τοῦ εἴ 16 (ji/B.c.) διότι γὰρ πολ[λὰ] ληρώι[δη] καὶ ψευδῆ προσαγ[γ]έλ[λε]ται κατανοεῖς καὶ αὐτός. Εχχ. of a later date seem to be rare, but cf. OG/S 66953 (i/a.D.) ἐάν τι εὑρεθῶσι ψευδὲς ἤζι) παρὰ τὸ δέον παραγεγραφότες, and CPR I. 232! (ii/iii a.p.) ψευδεῖς αἰτίας ἡμῖν ἐπιφέρειν.
