Moulton & Milligan — Vocabulary of the Greek NT
ἀπελεύθερος [page 56]
For the Pauline phrase ἀπελεύθερος Κυρίου in 1Co_7:22 , Deissmann ( LAE p. 332 f.) compares the common title freedman of the Emperor, Σεβαστοῦ ἀπελεύθερος or ἀπελεύθερος Καίσαρος : see e.g. Syll 371 .7 (time of Nero), and the numerous examples in Magie De vocabulis solemnibus p. 70. The adjective is very common in the papyri, e.g. P Oxy I. 98 .3 (A.D. 141 2) Ἀρχίᾳ ἀπελευθέρῳ Ἀμοιτᾶτος , ib. 104 .4 (A.D. 96) Σο (ῆ )ρις Ἁρποχρᾶτος ἀπελευθέρου al. For the light thrown by the ancient rites of manumission on the Pauline teaching regarding spiritual freedom see Deissmann s valuable discussion referred to above, and Archiv v. p. 117 f.
