count up, reckon (lit. with pebbles) : P Oxy I. 55 .12 (A.D. 283) ἀ ]κολού [θω ]ς τοῖς ψυφιστιση ἐν τῇ γρατίστη ( l. ψηφισθεῖσι . . . κρατίστῃ ) βουλῇ , in accordance with the vote of the high council (Edd.), ib. 41 .7 (report of a public meeting iii/iv A.D.) ψηφισθήτω ὁ πρύ (τανις ) ἐν τυαύτῃ ( l. τοιαύτῃ ) [ἡμέρ ]ᾳ , let the president receive the vote on this great day (Edd.), and P Fay 20 .8 (bis) (iii/iv A.D.) ὁπόσα . . . ἐψηφίσμεθα . . . καὶ ἔτι ψηφισθησόμεθα , what sums I have been voted and shall yet be voted. For constr. c. inf. cf. OGIS 48 .13 (B.C. 240) ἐψηφίσαν [το ] ἐξ ἐπιλέκτων ἀνδρῶν τὴν β̄ουλὴν [καὶ τὰ ] δικαστή [ρια αἱρεῖσ ]θαι . In P Cairo Zen III. 59328 .111 (B.C. 248) ψηφίσας ταῦτα , the verb has the meaning calculate.
For the subst. ψήφισμα , cf. P Oxy I. 41 as cited supra , where the citizens acclaim the president, .8 πολλῶν ψηφισμάτων ἄξιος , πολλῶν ἀγαθῶν ἀπολαύομεν διὰ σαί , πρύτανι , many votes do you deserve, for many are the blessings which we enjoy through you, O president (Edd.). The ψηφίσματα in p Tebt I. 6 .23 (B.C. 140 139) ( = Chrest. I. p. 391 ) are decrees of the priests (see Archiv iv. p. 569), and not royal decrees as the editors think probable, referring to P Tor I. 1 vii. 8 (B.C. 116) ( = Chrest. II. p. 37 ) κατὰ τοὺς πολιτικοὺς νόμους καὶ τὰ ψηφίσματα . See further Preisigke Fachwφrter s.v.

ψηφίζω "to count or reckon", properly "with pebbles" ( ψῆφοι, cf. Lat "calculare" from "calculus)", Anth. Act can mean "to vote", like ψηφίζομαι, but only in Soph. (δίκην ἐψήφισαν), and in late writers. more freq. Dep. ψηφίζομαι. properly, "to give one's vote with a pebble", which was thrown into the voting urn, absol., ψηφίζεσθαι ἐς ὑδρίαν Xen. : generally, "to vote", Hdt. ; τινι "for" any one, Dem. c. acc. rei, "to vote for, carry by vote", πόλεμον Thuc. ; ψ. παρασκευήν id=Thuc. , etc. c. inf. "to vote, give one's vote" to do a thing, Hdt. , Aesch. , etc.:—c. acc. et inf. "to vote that", ψ. τὰς σπονδὰς λελύσθαι Thuc. ψ. περί, ὑπέρ τινος Plat. , Aeschin. Act. in same sense as Mid., only in Soph. Aj. (δίκην ἐψήφισαν), and in late writers:—but the aor1 pass. ψηφισθῆναι is used in pass. sense, "to be voted", Thuc. , Xen. , etc.; so perf. part. ἐψηφισμένοι θανεῖν "condemned by vote" to die, Eur.
