In OGIS 583 .8 (i/A.D.) a certain Adrastus is praised as δωρεὰν καὶ αὐθαίρετος γυμνασίαρχος , i.e. he had provided oil at his own expense for the combatants, and exercised the office voluntarily (see the editor s note) : cf. also the late P Par 21 .15 (A.D. 616) αὐθαιρέτῳ βουλήσει καὶ ἀδόλῳ συνειδήσει . For the adverb see Magn 163 .15 ff. πᾶσάν τε λειτουργίαν . . . τελέσαντος τῇ πατρίδι αὐθαιρέτως , and the common technical phrase ἑκουσίως καὶ αὐθαιρέτως , as P Lond 280 .7 (A.D. 55) (= II. p. 193), BGU II. 581 .6 (A.D. 133), P Lips I. 17 .9 (A.D. 377), P Giss I. 56 .3 (vi/A.D.), al. : the phrase may also be expressed adjectivally, as with γνώμῃ in P Oxy X. 1280 .5 (iv/A.D.).
