βοηθός [page 114]
The word is very frequent in the ostraca for the assistants of the πράκτορες or tax-gatherers, see Wilcken Ostr. i. p. 618, and for a similar use in the papyri the editors note to P Fay 34 .3 (A.D. 161) βοηθοῖς γεωργῶν κώμης Πολυδευκείας , where they translate assistants in connexion with taxes upon cultivators at the village of Polydeucia. For a description of the Praefect as ὁ τοῦ νομοῦ βοηθός , helper of the district, see P Giss I. 46 .11 (time of Hadrian) ἀξιοῦμέν σε τὸν τοῦ νομοῦ βοηθὸν διακοῦσαι ἡμῶν , and cf. P Oxy III. 488 .23 (ii/iii A.D.) προσφεύγω σοι τῶι κυρίῳ καὶ πάντων βοηθῷ . For the word in its widest connotation it is sufficient to cite P Oxy IV. 743 .20 (B.C. 2) εἰ καὶ π [ρ ]ὸς ἄλλους εἶχον πρᾶγμα , βοηθὸν αὐτοῦ γ [ε ]νέσθαι διὰ ἣν ἔχομ̣ε̣(ν ) πρὸς ἑατοὺς φιλίαν , for although I (?) have had trouble with others you must assist him for the sake of our friendship (Edd.), and P Lond 410 .8 ( c. A.D. 346) (= II. p. 298) μετὰ τὸν θεὸν οὐδίναν ( l. οὐδένα ) ἔχομεν ἡμῆς βοηθόν , after (i.e. except) God, we have none to help us (Ed.); also from ii/B.C., P Leid E .26 δεόμεθά σου μεθ᾽ ἱκετείας , καθότι οὐ διαλείπις ἡμῶν ἀντιλαμβανόμενος , καὶ ἐν τούτοις βοιηθὸν γενόμενον προσκαλέσασθαι κτλ .
