Broken Communion

1 sermons

Broken communion is a profound theme in Scripture that highlights the consequences of sin and the call to reconciliation. In Genesis 3, the fall of humanity results in a severed relationship with God, illustrating the devastating effects of disobedience. This separation is echoed in Isaiah 59:2, where the prophet declares, 'But your iniquities have separated you from your God; your sins have hidden his face from you.' The New Testament further expounds on the nature of communion through the teachings of Jesus, who emphasizes the importance of unity among believers in John 17:21, praying that 'they may all be one.' Broken communion can manifest not only in our relationship with God but also in our interactions with one another, as Paul warns in 1 Corinthians 11:28-29 about the seriousness of partaking in the Lord's Supper unworthily, which can lead to judgment. Yet, the Bible also offers hope for restoration. In 2 Corinthians 5:18, Paul reminds us that through Christ, we are given the ministry of reconciliation, urging believers to mend broken relationships and restore communion with God and each other. Understanding broken communion invites us to reflect on our spiritual lives and seek the healing that comes from confession and repentance, as we are called to live in harmony, reflecting the love of Christ.
