Church Polity

2 sermons

Church polity, the structure and governance of the church, finds its foundation in the teachings of Scripture. The New Testament provides a framework for understanding how the body of Christ is to be organized and led. In Acts 14:23, we see Paul and Barnabas appointing elders in every church, highlighting the importance of leadership in nurturing and guiding the community of believers. The Apostle Peter emphasizes the role of elders in 1 Peter 5:2-3, where he instructs them to shepherd the flock willingly and not for shameful gain, reflecting the servant leadership modeled by Christ (Mark 10:45). Moreover, the concept of the church as a body, as articulated in 1 Corinthians 12:12-27, underscores the diversity of gifts and roles within the church, suggesting that polity should reflect the unity and interdependence of its members. Jesus' teachings in Matthew 18:15-17 further illustrate the importance of accountability and discipline within the church, providing a biblical basis for governance that fosters holiness and reconciliation. As believers explore the various forms of church polity, such as episcopal, presbyterian, or congregational models, it is essential to ground these structures in the biblical principles of love, unity, and mutual submission, ensuring that the church remains a faithful witness to the gospel.
