Dualism

1 sermons

Dualism, the philosophical concept that emphasizes the distinction between the material and spiritual realms, finds its roots in ancient thought but raises significant questions when viewed through a biblical lens. In contrast to dualistic beliefs that often suggest a fundamental opposition between good and evil, the Scriptures affirm that God is sovereign over all creation, as seen in Colossians 1:16-17, where Paul declares that all things were created through Him and for Him. The Bible teaches that while the physical world is fallen due to sin (Romans 5:12), it is not inherently evil; rather, God declared His creation 'very good' in Genesis 1:31. Furthermore, Jesus' teachings, such as in Matthew 6:24, emphasize the importance of serving God alone, highlighting the unity of purpose in our spiritual and material lives. The dangers of Gnosticism, a heretical form of dualism that denigrates the physical in favor of the spiritual, are addressed in 1 John 4:2, where believers are urged to discern the truth of Christ's incarnation. Ultimately, the biblical narrative invites us to recognize the harmonious relationship between the spiritual and physical, culminating in the promise of resurrection and restoration found in 1 Corinthians 15:54-55.
