Eternal Generation

1 sermons

Eternal Generation refers to the theological understanding of the relationship between God the Father and God the Son, emphasizing that the Son is eternally begotten of the Father. This concept is rooted in Scripture, where we see the unique divinity of Jesus Christ affirmed. In John 1:1-3, we read, 'In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.' This passage highlights not only the pre-existence of Christ but also His essential unity with the Father. Furthermore, in John 5:26, Jesus states, 'For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son also to have life in himself.' This indicates that the Son's existence and divine nature are derived from the Father, yet they exist in a co-eternal relationship. The Nicene Creed articulates this truth, affirming that the Son is 'begotten, not made, of one substance with the Father.' Additionally, in Hebrews 1:3, we learn that the Son is 'the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being,' further demonstrating His divine nature and eternal generation. Understanding this doctrine deepens our appreciation of the mystery of the Trinity and the profound love shared within the Godhead.
