Vengeance

2 sermons

In the Bible, vengeance is often associated with the idea of divine retribution or justice, reflecting God's righteousness in dealing with sin and wrongdoing. The Hebrew word for vengeance, "naqam" (נָקַם), connotes the act of avenging or exacting punishment for an offense. This concept is illustrated in passages such as Deuteronomy 32:35, where God declares, "Vengeance is mine, and recompense," indicating that ultimate justice belongs to Him. The New Testament continues this theme, emphasizing that believers should refrain from personal vengeance, as seen in Romans 12:19, which states, "Do not take revenge, my dear friends, but leave room for God's wrath, for it is written: 'It is mine to avenge; I will repay,' says the Lord."Vengeance, therefore, carries both a negative connotation when associated with human actions—often leading to cycles of violence—and a positive one when aligned with God's justice. It serves as a reminder of the seriousness of sin and the importance of relying on God's authority to enact justice rather than taking matters into one's own hands. The call for believers is to trust in God's timing and righteousness while striving to cultivate forgiveness and mercy in their own lives, as modeled by Christ (Matthew 5:38-39).
