BSA

1 Now the Philistines [people from the region of Philistia] fought [engaged in battle, waged war] against Israel [the descendants of Jacob], and the men [male individuals, warriors] of Israel fled [ran away quickly, escaped] before them, and many fell [were defeated] slain [killed, wounded] on Mount [a high hill, a mountain] Gilboa [a swollen heap, a place of defeat]. word study 2 The Philistines [pursuers, enemies of Israel] followed hard [closely, with intense pursuit] after Saul [Shaul, the desired one] and his sons [descendants, heirs], and they killed [slew, struck down] Saul’s sons [offspring, children] Jonathan [Jehovah has given], Abinadab [my father is noble], and Malchishua [my king is wealth]. word study 3 When the battle intensified [went sore] against Saul [the desired one, Shaul], the archers [men who shoot with the bow, skilled marksmen] overtook him and wounded [hit, distressed] him [severely, with arrows]. word study 4 Then Saul [the king of Israel, Shaul] said to his armor-bearer [the servant who had the care of his arms], “Draw [to pull or draw something out] your sword [a cutting instrument] and run it through me [to pierce or stab], or these [ha eleh, these specific] uncircumcised [those who are not circumcised, heathen] men will come and torture [to abuse] me!” But his armor-bearer [nosay] was terrified [to fear or revere] and refused [lo, not, to be unwilling] to do it. So Saul [Shaul] took his own sword [charbeh] and fell [to fall or be defeated] on it. word study 5 When his armor-bearer [servant, carrier of his weapons] saw [perceived, looked upon] that Saul [Shaul, the desired one] was dead [had died, met his end], he too [also, likewise] fell [threw himself, came to rest] on his own sword [upon the blade, by his own hand] and died [passed away, met his death]. word study 6 So Saul [the desired one, Shaul] died [to perish, come to an end] together with his three [a triad, thrice] sons [male descendants, offspring] and all [everything, the entirety] his house [family, royal lineage, dwelling place] [as a punishment, in a single event]. word study 7 When all [the entire nation of] the Israelites in the valley [lowland area, like the Valley of Elah] saw that the army had fled [run away, escaped] and that Saul [Shaul, meaning desired] and his sons had died [passed away, met their end], they abandoned [forsaken, relinquished] their cities [towns, settlements] and ran away [fled, escaped]. So the Philistines [inhabitants of Philistia, a region in southwest Israel] came and occupied [dwelt, lived in] their cities [towns, settlements]. word study 8 The next day [on the morrow, following], when the Philistines [people from Philistia, a neighboring region] came to strip [remove, plunder] the dead [slain, fallen in battle], they found Saul [Shaul, the desired one] and his sons [descendants, offspring] fallen [lying, defeated] on Mount Gilboa [a mountain in Palestine, a place of defeat]. word study 9 They stripped [removed his clothing and armor, plundered] Saul, cut off his head [beheaded him], took his armor [weapons and equipment], and sent messengers [proclaimers, announcers] throughout the land [territory, region] of the Philistines [enemies of Israel, non-Hebrew people] to proclaim [declare, announce] the news [tidings, report] in the temple [place of worship, shrine] of their idols [false gods, images] and among their people [nation, community]. word study 10 They put his armor [war-dress, utensils] in the temple [house] of their gods [idols, Elohim] and hung [fastened, fixed] his head [skull] in the temple [house] of Dagon [a pagan God, idol]. word study 11 When the people [inhabitants, residents] of Jabesh-gilead [a town in the Gilead region] heard [listened, gave attention to] about everything [all that had occurred] the Philistines [immigrants from other places, non-Israelites] had done [made, carried out] to Saul [Shaul, the desired one, a Benjamite king], word study 12 all their men [valiant, brave warriors] of valor [strength, might] set out and retrieved [took away, carried] the bodies [corpses] of Saul [Shaul, the desired one] and his sons [descendants, offspring] and brought them to Jabesh [a town in Israel]. And they buried [interred, laid to rest] their bones [remains, skeletal frame] under [beneath, below] the oak [strong tree, elm] in Jabesh [the town] and fasted [abstained from food, humbled themselves] seven days. word study 13 So Saul [Shaul, the desired one] died for his [spiritual] unfaithfulness [transgression, trespass] to the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God], because he did not keep [obey, guard] the word [command, instruction] of the LORD and even [also, too] consulted [sought counsel from] a medium [one who has a familiar spirit, a witch] for guidance [direction, to inquire], word study 14 and he failed [did not, neglected] to inquire [seek, ask] of the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God]. So the LORD [the sovereign Ruler] put him to death [caused him to die, slew him] and turned [surrounded, transferred] the kingdom [kingship, royal domain] over to David [the youngest son of Jesse, a king of Israel] son [a descendant, an heir] of Jesse [the father of King David, a member of the tribe of Judah]. word study
