1 Then Moses [the Israelite leader, born to Amram and Jochebed] went up from the plains [desert plain near the Jordan River, stretching to the Red Sea] of Moab [land and descendants of the son of Lot] to Mount Nebo [a mountain in Moab where Moses died], to the top [head or chief] of Pisgah [a mountain in Moab where Moses viewed the Promised Land], which [a conjunction that connects ideas and events] faces [is over against, is in front of] Jericho [a city in Palestine, the first conquered by the Israelites in Canaan]. And the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God] showed [to see or look after, to provide] him the whole [all, everything] land [the soil or ground, a country, territory, or region]—from Gilead [a mountainous region east of the Jordan River, a rocky region] as far as [until] Dan [a son of Jacob and the founder of one of the twelve tribes of Israel], word study 2 all of Naphtali [the tribe descended from Jacob’s son], the land [territory, region] of Ephraim [doubly fruitful, referring to Joseph’s son] and Manasseh [a grandson of Jacob], all the land [country, territory] of Judah [the tribe descended from Judah, the son of Jacob] as far as [until, unto] the Western Sea [the Mediterranean, the hinder sea, the utmost sea], word study 3 the Negev [southern district, south country], and the region [plain, valley] from the Valley [low area, plain] of Jericho [its moon, city of palms] (the City of Palms [city of palm trees, town of palm-trees]) all the way [as far as, until] to Zoar [near the Dead Sea, spared city]. word study 4 And the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God] said to him, “This is the land [the promised territory, a country] that I swore [to make an oath, a solemn promise] to give [to bestow, to grant] Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob [the patriarchs, the fathers of the faith] when I said, ‘I will give [to provide, to supply] it to your descendants [your seed, your offspring].’ I have let you see [caused you to behold, allowed you to gaze] it with your own eyes [with your physical sight, with your spiritual perception], but you will not cross [pass over, transition] into it [the land, the promised territory].” word study 5 So Moses [the faithful leader, servant of God] the servant [or slave, one who serves] of the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God] died [passed away, came to an end] there [in that place, at that time] in the land [the soil, ground, or territory] of Moab [the region of the descendants of Lot], as [according to, in fulfillment of] the LORD [Yehovah, the supreme authority] had said [spoken, commanded, or decreed]. word study 6 And He buried [laid to rest, interred] him in a valley [deep, narrow gorge] in the land [soil, ground, territory] of Moab [descendants of Lot] facing [opposite, over against] Beth-peor [house of Peor], and no one [man, individual] to this day [present time, till now] knows [is aware of, has discovered] the location [place, site] of his grave [tomb, sepulchre, resting place]. word study 7 Moses [the Israelite leader, a son of Amram and Jochebed] was a hundred [a period of one hundred years] and twenty [two decades] years old when he died [experienced natural death, passed away], yet his eyes [the source of sight, the window to the soul] were not weak [dim, lacking vigor], and his vitality [natural force, vigor, or freshness] had not diminished [fled, become feeble]. word study 8 The Israelites [children of Israel, descendants of Jacob] grieved [wept, mourned] for Moses [the Israelite leader, God’s chosen servant] in the plains [desert wilderness, Arabah] of Moab [the land of Lot’s descendants] thirty [a month of days] days, until the time of weeping [overflowing tears, lamenting] and mourning [grieving, sorrow] for Moses came to an end [was completed, finished]. word study 9 Now Joshua [the leader] son of Nun was filled [made full, complete] with the spirit [breath, divine influence] of wisdom [prudence, discernment] because Moses had laid his hands [in a gesture of blessing, appointment] on him. So the Israelites [the children of Israel, God’s chosen people] obeyed him and did as the LORD [Yehovah, the covenant God] had commanded [given orders, instructed] Moses. word study 10 Since that time [from then on], no prophet [spokesperson for God] has risen [stood up, come forth] in Israel [the descendants of Jacob] like Moses [the leader who received the law], whom the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God] knew [was intimately acquainted with] face to face [in His presence, directly]word study 11 no prophet who did all [every single one of] the signs [miraculous tokens, wonders] and wonders [special displays of God’s power] that the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God] sent Moses to do [perform, accomplish] in the land [territory, region] of Egypt [a country in northeastern Africa] to Pharaoh [the king of Egypt, a powerful leader] and to all [everything, every person] his officials [servants, slaves] and all [every part of] his land [country, territory], word study 12 and no prophet who performed [with mighty hand, demonstrating power] all the mighty acts [great terror, awesome deeds] of power [strength, ability] and awesome deeds [fear, great miracles] that Moses [the Israelite leader] did in the sight [before the eyes, in full view] of all [every, the entire] Israel. word study
