Ezekiel 39

1 “As for you, O son [human, descendant] of man [Adam, the first human], prophesy [speak under divine influence, declare God’s message] against Gog [a northern nation, a leader] and declare that this is what the Lord [Adonay, the sovereign God] GOD [Yehovah, the self-existent God] says: Behold [look, take notice], I am against you, O Gog [the chief prince], chief prince [leader, ruler] of Meshech [a people group, a region] and Tubal [a region, a nation]. word study 2 I will turn you around [to face a different direction, to reverse course], drive you along [lead you on, guide you], bring you up from the far [distant, uttermost] north [Zaphon, the northern region], and send you against [upon, to attack] the mountains [hills] of Israel [the descendants of Jacob, God’s chosen people]. word study 3 Then I will strike [smite, knock] the bow [weapon of war] from your left [north] hand and dash down [cause to fall, make drop] the arrows [sharp objects shot from a bow] from your right [direction of strength, Benjamin] hand. word study 4 On the mountains [hills] of Israel you will fall [be defeated, come to an end]—you and all [every single one] your troops [armies, bands] and the nations [peoples, Gentiles] with you. I will give you as food [to be devoured, a sacrifice] to every kind of ravenous [flesh-eating, predatory] bird [bird of prey, winged creature] and wild [feral, savage] beast [animal, living creature]. word study 5 You will fall [come down, die] in the open [flat, cultivated] field [land, wilderness], for [because, since] I [the Lord, Adonay] have spoken [declared, uttered], declares [says, promises] the Lord [Adonay, the sovereign Master] GOD [Yehovah]. word study 6 I will send [dispatch, cause to go] fire [burning, flame] on Magog [a region in the north, a barbarous land] and on those who dwell [reside, remain] securely [in safety, without fear, with confidence] in the coastlands [islands, habitable spots, desirable places], and they will know [ascertain by seeing, learn, perceive] that I am [exist as, am the same] the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God]. word study 7 So I will make My holy [set apart, sacred] name [identity, reputation] known [revealed, acknowledged] among My people [nation, descendants] Israel [Jacob’s descendants] and will no longer allow it to be profaned [desecrated, dishonored] [by my people or the nations]. Then the nations [Gentiles, non-Hebrews] will know [recognize, understand] that I am the LORD [Yehovah, the self-existent God], the Holy One [separate from sin, uniquely divine] in Israel [the chosen people, the symbolic name of Jacob]. word study 8 Yes, it is coming [soon to arrive, at hand], and it will surely [without a doubt, certainly] happen, declares the Lord [Adonay, the sovereign Master] GOD [Yehovah]. This is the day [a time of fulfillment, a specific period] of which I have spoken [declared, prophesied]. word study 9 Then those who dwell [reside, live] in the cities [towns, settlements] of Israel [God’s chosen people] will go out [come forth, exit], kindle [light, ignite] fires, and burn up [consume, destroy] the weapons [armour, military equipment]—the bucklers [shields, protective devices] and shields [defensive armor], the bows [weapons of strength] and arrows [projectiles], the clubs [staffs, rods] and spears [javelins, lances]. For seven years they will use them for fuel [burning, firewood]. word study 10 They will not gather wood [from the countryside or the field] from the countryside or cut it [by chopping or carving] from the forests, for they will use the weapons [as fuel or for burning] for fuel. They will loot [take by force, plunder] those who looted them and plunder [seize violently, rob] those who plundered them, declares the Lord [Adonay, the supreme ruler] GOD [Yehovah]. word study 11 And on that day [in the future, at a specific time] I will give Gog [the northern nation] a burial place [a grave, a sepulchre] in Israel [the people of God, the chosen nation], the Valley of the Travelers [the valley of those passing by, the valley of Abarim], east [toward the rising sun, in the direction of the East] of the Sea [the Mediterranean, the western sea]. It will block [stop, hinder] those who travel through [pass by, cross over], because Gog and all his hordes [multitude, crowd] will be buried [interred, laid to rest] there. So it will be called [named, designated] the Valley of Hamon-gog [the valley of the multitude of Gog, the valley of Gog’s army]. word study 12 For seven months the house [a dwelling place, family, or community] of Israel [the descendants of Jacob, God’s chosen people] will be burying [interring, laying to rest] them in order to [for the purpose of, because of] cleanse [purify, make ceremonially clean] the land [the earth, territory, or region]. word study 13 All [every single one] the people [nation, community] of the land [earth, territory] will bury [inter, lay to rest] them, and it will bring [result in, lead to] them renown [honor, recognition] on the day [appointed time, moment] I display [reveal, show] My glory [majestic presence, splendor], declares [utters, proclaims] the Lord [Adonay, Master] GOD [Yehovah]. word study 14 And men [of continual employment, set apart] will be employed to continually [constantly, without interruption] pass through the land [the earth, the ground] to cleanse [purify, make holy] it by burying [interring, laying to rest] the invaders [those who remain, the slain] who remain [are left, still present] on the ground [the face of the earth]. At the end [the conclusion, the border] of the seven [sacred, complete] months they will begin [start, initiate] their search [examination, investigation]. word study 15 As they pass [travel, journey] through the land [earth, territory], anyone who sees [perceives, notices] a human [man’s, Adam’s] bone [body, substance] will set up [construct, establish] a pillar [signpost, monument] next to [beside, near] it, until [till, as far as] the gravediggers [buriers, undertakers] have buried [interred, laid to rest] it in the Valley [lowland, gorge] of Hamon-gog [multitude of Gog, vast army]. word study 16 (Even the city [a town, settlement] will be named Hamonah [the multitude, a city of great army]. ) And so they will cleanse [purify, make ceremonially clean] the land [the earth, territory]. word study 17 And as for you, son [descendant, child] of man [the human, Adam], this is what the Lord [Adonay, Master] GOD [Yehovah] says: Call out to every kind [sort, species] of bird [fowl, winged creature] and to every beast [living creature, animal] of the field [open land, wilderness]: ‘Assemble [gather, come together] and come together from all around [on every side, surrounding] to the sacrificial feast [great sacrifice, offering] that I am preparing [sacrificing, providing] for you, a great [large, abundant] feast on the mountains [hills, high places] of Israel [God’s chosen people, Jacob’s descendants]. There you will eat [devour, consume] flesh [meat, body] and drink [swallow, ingest] blood [life, vital fluid]. word study 18 You will eat the flesh [body, or living being] of the mighty [strong warriors, or valiant men] and drink the blood [the liquid that flows through the body] of the princes [leaders, or high-ranking officials] of the earth [land, or territory] as though they were rams [strong male sheep], lambs [young sheep], goats [full-grown male goats], and bulls [young oxen]—all the fattened animals [well-fed, or healthy livestock] of Bashan [a fertile region, or a land of abundance]. word study 19 At the sacrifice [my offering, which I have prepared for you] I am preparing, you will eat fat [the richest part, choicest portion] until you are gorged [full, satisfied] and drink blood [the liquid that flows through the body] until you are drunk [intoxicated, overwhelmed]. word study 20 And at My table [a place of communion and provision] you will eat your fill [be completely satisfied, have more than enough] of horses [swallow, chariot horses] and riders [charioteers, cavalry], of mighty men [strong warriors, champions] and warriors [men of war, soldiers] of every kind [all types, every sort],’ declares the Lord [Adonay, Master] GOD [Yehovah]. word study 21 I will display [reveal, set forth] My glory [splendor, majestic presence] among the nations [Gentiles, non-Hebrew peoples], and all the nations will see [behold, perceive] the judgment [justice, righteous verdict] that I execute [carry out, bring to pass] and the hand [power, strength] that I lay [place, set] upon them. word study 22 From that day [and forward, from then on] forward the house [dwelling place, family] of Israel [Jacob’s descendants] will know [be certain, ascertain by seeing] that I [emphatically, the one speaking] am the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God] their God [Elohim, the one supreme God, having power and authority over them]. word study 23 And the nations [heathen, Gentile peoples] will know that the house [family, descendants] of Israel went into exile [captivity, forced migration] for their iniquity [moral evil, sin], because they were unfaithful [trespassed, acted treacherously] to Me. So I hid [concealed, turned away] My face [presence, countenance] from them and delivered [gave, handed over] them into the hands [power, control] of their enemies [adversaries, oppressors], so that they all [every single one] fell [were defeated, slain] by the sword [cutting instrument, weapon of war]. word study 24 I dealt with them according to their uncleanness [moral impurity, sinful actions] and transgressions [rebellion, revolt against God], and I hid [concealed, turned away] My face [presence, countenance] from them. word study 25 Therefore [thus, in this manner] this is what the Lord [Adonay, the supreme ruler] GOD [Yehovah] says: Now [at this time, in this present moment] I will restore [bring back, return] Jacob [the nation of Israel, the descendants of Jacob] from captivity [exile, bondage] and will have compassion [show love, pity] on the whole [all, entire] house [family, nation] of Israel, and I will be jealous [zealous, protective] for My holy [set-apart, sacred] name [reputation, character]. word study 26 They will forget [be conscious of, bear] their disgrace [shame, reproach] and all [every, the entirety of] the treachery [unfaithfulness, trespasses] they committed [acted, trespassed] against Me, when they dwell [live, reside] securely [safely, with confidence] in their land [country, territory], with no one [nothing, none] to frighten [make afraid, tremble with fear] them. word study 27 When I bring them back [from among the peoples, from their enemies’ countries] from the peoples [nations, Gentiles] and gather them out [collect, assemble] of the lands [territories, regions] of their enemies [adversaries, haters], I will show My holiness [set apart as sacred, consecrate] in them [in their midst, among them] in the sight [before the eyes, in the presence] of many [a great number, a multitude] nations [Gentiles, heathen]. word study 28 Then they will know [be certain, have assurance] that I am the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God] their God [Elohim, the supreme God], when I regather [gather, collect] them to their own land [the earth, the material world], not leaving [abandoning, forsaking] any of them behind [remaining, staying] after their exile [captivity, banishment] among the nations [Gentiles, non-Hebrews]. word study 29 And I will no longer [completely, utterly] hide My face [presence, countenance] from them, for I will pour out [shed, lavish] My Spirit [breath of life, divine energy] on the house [family, descendants] of Israel [God’s chosen people], declares the Lord [Adonay, Master] GOD [Yehovah].” word study
