1 At that [specific, particular] time Merodach-baladan [son of the Babylonian king] son of Baladan king of Babylon [a city of confusion] sent letters [scrolls, written documents] and a gift [offering, present] to Hezekiah, for he had heard [been informed, learned] about Hezekiah’s illness [weakness, sickness] and recovery [restoration to health, strengthening]. word study 2 And Hezekiah [rejoiced greatly, was glad of them] welcomed the envoys gladly and showed them what was in his [treasure house, storehouse of precious things] treasure house—the silver [money, wealth], the gold [valuable metal], the spices [fragrant oils, aromas], and the precious [extremely valuable] oil, as well as his entire [all his weapons, armory] armory—all that was found in his storehouses [treasure rooms]. There was nothing in his palace [royal dwelling] or in all his [kingdom, dominion] dominion that Hezekiah did not show them. word study 3 Then the prophet [messenger of God, spokesperson] Isaiah went to King [ruler, monarch] Hezekiah and asked, “Where [from what place, whence] did those men come from, and what [what message, what words] did they say to you?” “They came to me from a distant [far-off] land [country, territory],” Hezekiah replied, “from [out of, originating in] Babylon [Babel, a place of confusion].” word study 4 “What [in what manner, how] have they seen in your palace [house, dwelling place]?” Isaiah asked. “They have seen [looked at, observed] everything [all things, the whole] in my palace [house, treasury],” answered Hezekiah [the king of Judah]. “There is nothing [not a thing, no thing] among my treasures [storehouses, riches] that I did not [never] show them [reveal, display].” word study 5 Then Isaiah [the prophet, Jeshaiah, Jehovah has saved] said to Hezekiah [the king of Judah], “Hear [listen, obey, give ear to] the word [message, thing, or affair] of the LORD [Yehovah, the self-existent God] of Hosts [armies, the heavenly forces, the commander of the armies of angels]: word study 6 The time [a future period, a season of fulfillment] will surely come when everything [all that is precious, every treasure] in your palace [royal dwelling, seat of power] and all that your fathers [ancestors, forefathers] have stored up [laid up, treasured] until this day [the present time, this moment] will be carried off [taken away, removed] to Babylon [a place of exile, a city of captivity]. Nothing [not a single thing, no remnant] will be left [remain, spared], says the LORD [Yehovah, the covenant God]. word study 7 And some of your descendants [sons, offspring, or posterity], your own flesh and blood [relatives, family], will be taken away [carried off, removed] to be eunuchs [unsexed servants, officials] in the palace [temple, royal court] of the king [ruler, monarch] of Babylon [a city of confusion, Babel].” word study 8 But Hezekiah [the righteous king of Judah] said to Isaiah [Jehovah has saved, a prophet of God], “The word [divine message, declaration] of the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God] that you have spoken [communicated, declared] is good [pleasant, beneficial].” For he thought [reflected, considered], “At least [certainly, surely] there will be peace [shalom, completeness, wellness] and security [truth, faithfulness] in my lifetime [days, a period of time].” word study
