1 Then Job [the patriarch famous for his patience] replied [answered, responded to] to the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God]: word study 2 “I know [to ascertain by seeing, to learn] that You can do [are able, have power] all things [everything, every purpose] and that no [not any] plan [plot, device, məzimmāh] of Yours [from You] can be [will not be] thwarted [restrained, withheld]. word study 3 You asked, ‘Who [hiding counsel] is this who conceals [hides or withholds] My counsel [plan or advice, wisdom] without [lacking] knowledge [understanding, insight]?’ Surely I spoke of things I did not understand [comprehend, discern], things too wonderful [amazing, marvelous] for me to know [have knowledge of, perceive]. word study 4 You said, ‘Listen now [hear and obey, give attention to me], and I will speak [communicate my thoughts, declare my words]. I will question you [ask and inquire of you, seek your understanding], and you shall inform Me [declare to me, make known your thoughts to me].’ word study 5 My ears [the ability to hear, the faculty of perception] had heard [received a report, been informed] of You [the Almighty, the All-Powerful], but now [at this present time, in this moment] my eyes [the organs of sight, the windows of the soul] have seen [beheld, looked upon with understanding] You [the One who reveals Himself]. word study 6 Therefore I retract [reject, spurn] my words, and I repent [am deeply sorry, comfort myself] in dust [dry earth, clay] and ashes [something worthless].” word study 7 After the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God] had spoken these words to Job, He said to Eliphaz [my God is gold] the Temanite [a descendant of Teman, a grandson of Esau], “My wrath [strong anger, indignation] is kindled [burning, furious] against you and your two friends [companions, neighbors]. For you have not spoken about Me accurately [truthfully, with precision], as My servant [faithful attendant, devoted follower] Job has. word study 8 So now [at this present time], take seven bulls [young oxen] and seven rams [a mighty man; a post], go to My servant [faithful follower, bondslave] Job, and sacrifice [offer up, present as a gift] a burnt offering [a completely consumed sacrifice, ascending to God] for yourselves. Then My servant [faithful follower, bondslave] Job will pray [intercede, make petition] for you, for I will accept [receive with favor, lift up] his prayer and not deal with you according to your folly [foolishness, wickedness, immoral actions]. For you have not spoken [communicated, uttered] accurately [truthfully, rightly] about Me, as My servant [faithful follower, bondslave] Job has.” word study 9 So Eliphaz [a descendant of Esau] the Temanite, Bildad [a friend of Job] the Shuhite, and Zophar [meaning from Naamah, a place of pleasantness] the Naamathite went and did as the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God] had told them; and the LORD [the supreme God, accepting prayer] accepted Job’s [the patriarch, a man of faith] request [prayer, petition]. word study 10 After Job [the patriarch famous for his patience] had prayed [interceded, made supplication] for his friends [neighbors, companions], the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God] restored [turned back, returned to a former state] his prosperity [wealth, success] and doubled [gave twice as much, increased twofold] his former possessions [all that he had before, his previous wealth]. word study 11 All his brothers [male siblings, relatives, and friends] and sisters [female siblings, relatives, and close family members] and prior acquaintances [those who had known him before, his former friends] came and dined [ate bread, shared a meal] with him in his house [his dwelling place, home]. They consoled him and comforted him [showed sympathy, bemoaned, and soothed] over all the adversity [evil, trouble, and affliction] that the LORD [Yehovah, the supreme God] had brought upon him [allowed to happen, caused to occur]. And each one gave him a piece of silver [money, a coin, or a unit of exchange] and a gold ring [a valuable earring]. word study 12 So the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God] blessed [to praise or honor, conferred prosperity upon] Job’s latter days [the last or final part of his life] more than his first [the beginning or initial part of his life]. He owned [a large multitude, fourteen thousand] 14,000 sheep [a flock of sheep or goats], 6,000 [six thousand, a numerous amount] camels [used for riding or carrying loads], 1,000 yoke [a pair or team, often of animals] of oxen [domesticated cattle, used for work], and 1,000 female donkeys [she-asses, emphasizing gentle nature]. word study 13 And he also had [in addition to his previous family] seven sons [male descendants, heirs] and three daughters [female children, or women of his household]. word study 14 He named [called out to, designated] his first [one, unique] daughter Jemimah [day by day], his second Keziah [cassia, a spice], and his third Keren-happuch [horn of antimony, a type of metal]. word study 15 No women [as fair, so lovely] as beautiful as Job’s daughters [Bath, female children] could be found [discovered, attained] in all [every part of] the land [earth, territory], and their father [parent, patriarch] granted [gave, bestowed] them an inheritance [possession, heritage] among [in the midst of, together with] their brothers [male siblings, kin]. word study 16 After this [following these events], Job [the patriarch famous for his patience] lived [experienced life, was revived] 140 years [a hundred and forty years, a significant period of time] and saw [was blessed to see, looked after] his children [sons, descendants] and their children [grandchildren, sons’ sons] to the fourth [even four] generation [period of time, group of people]. word study 17 And so Job [the patriarch famous for his patience] died [came to his end, passed away], old [aged, elderly] and full [satisfied, sated] of years [days, a long life]. word study
