proclaim] them: When you [as a nation, collectively] cross [pass over, transition] the Jordan [the river, a border] into the land [territory, region] of Canaan [the promised land, a place of inheritance], word study 52 you must drive out [forcefully dispossess, expel] before you all the inhabitants [people, residents] of the land [territory, region], destroy [annihilate, demolish] all their carved images [figured stones, idols] and cast idols [molten images, metal statues], and demolish [tear down, lay waste] all their high places [cultic platforms, pagan temples]. word study 53 Whatever falls [is allotted, comes out] to each one by lot will be his [his possession, his territory].
