1 Deliver me [rescue, save] from my enemies [those who oppose, adversaries], O my God [Elohim, the supreme Protector]; protect me [keep me safe, defend] from those who rise [stand, attack] against me [oppose, come against]. word study 2 Deliver me [rescue, snatch away] from workers [those who practice, perpetrate] of iniquity [wickedness, evil deeds], and save me [keep me safe, preserve] from men [individuals, people] of bloodshed [bloody, violent, murderous]. word study 3 See how they lie [lie in secret, watching] in wait for me. Fierce [powerful, strong] men conspire [assemble, gather] against me for no [none, without] transgression [sin, wrongdoing] or sin [evil, iniquity] of my own, O LORD [Yahweh, the sovereign God]. word study 4 For no [transgression or sin] fault of my own [without a cause, unprovoked], they move swiftly [run and prepare themselves] to attack me [lie in wait, ambush]. Arise [stir up, awake] to help me [assist, come to my aid], and take notice [behold, see]. word study 5 O LORD [the supreme God, Yehovah] God of Hosts [the commander of heavenly armies], the God [Elohim, the omnipotent One] of Israel, rouse [awake, stir into action] Yourself to punish [visit, inspect, and judge] all the nations; show [be not merciful, have no pity] no mercy [compassion, kindness] to the wicked [morally evil, sinful] traitors [transgressors, those who deal treacherously]. Selah word study 6 They return [at evening time, in the late afternoon] in the evening, snarling [howling, making a noise] like dogs [wild beasts, fierce animals] and prowling [going round about, roaming] around the city [the town, the metropolis]. word study 7 See what they spew [belch out, utter forth] from their mouths— sharp words [swords, hurtful language] from their lips: “For who [none, no one] can hear us [listen to, give attention to]?” word study 8 But You, O LORD [the Supreme Ruler, Yehovah], laugh [scoff, mock] at them; You scoff [have in derision, ridicule] at all the nations [heathen, pagan peoples]. word study 9 I will keep watch for You [waiting with expectation], O my strength [my Rock, my confidence], because You, O God [Elohim, the supreme God], are my fortress [my high tower, my defense]. word study 10 My God [of mercy, the supreme Elohim] of loving devotion [with trustworthy love, faithful kindness] will come to meet me; God [the high refuge, my strong tower] will let me stare down [see my desire upon, look at in triumph] my foes [enemies, haters]. word study 11 Do not kill them [slay them not, put them not to death], or my people will forget [lest they forget, so my people will keep the memory of them]. Scatter them [shake them, send them in all directions] by Your power [strength, divine might], and bring them down [make them low, defeat them], O Lord [our saviour], our shield. word study 12 By the sins [transgressions, rebellious acts] of their mouths and the words [utterances, spoken thoughts] of their lips, let them be trapped [caught, ensnared] in their pride [arrogance, self-importance], in the curses [evil declarations, harmful words] and lies [falsehoods, deceptions] they utter [speak, proclaim]. word study 13 Consume them in [righteous] wrath; consume them [completely, utterly] till they are no more, so it may be known to the ends of the earth that [the one true] God rules [with sovereign power, as King] over Jacob [the people of Israel, His chosen ones]. Selah word study 14 They return [at sunset] in the evening, snarling [growling, howling] like dogs [with intense rage, fiercely] and prowling [roaming, going around] around the city [the town, the metropolis]. word study 15 They scavenge [wander up and down, roam around] for food [meat, things to eat], and growl [roar, howl, grudge] if they are not [if they be not, though they] satisfied [have enough, find enough to eat]. word study 16 But I will sing [joyfully, with praise] of Your strength [power, mighty ability] and proclaim [declare, announce] Your loving devotion [mercy, kindness, faithfully loving us] in the morning [at dawn, every morning]. For You are my fortress [high tower, defense], my refuge [safe haven, place of safety] in times of trouble [day of distress, adversity]. word study 17 To You, O my strength [my Rock, my power], I sing praises [with joyful music, shouting for joy], for You, O God [my Defender, my Savior], are my fortress [my high tower, my refuge], my God of loving devotion [my merciful God, my kindness]. word study
