Zechariah 2

1 Then I lifted up [raised, looked up] my eyes [sight, vision] and saw [behold, looked] a man [person, individual] with a measuring line [tape, cord] in his hand [grasp, possession]. word study 2 “Where [to what destination, whither] are you going?” I asked [said to him]. “To measure [to take the measure of, to see what is the breadth thereof] Jerusalem [the city of peace, the capital of Palestine],” he replied [said unto me], “and to determine [to see, to find out] its width [breadth, how wide it is] and length [how long it is].” word study 3 Then the angel [messenger, heavenly being] who was speaking with me went out, and another angel [sent by God, a divine emissary] came out to meet him [to confer, to encounter] word study 4 and said to him, “Run and tell that young man: ‘Jerusalem will be a city [like villages] without walls because of the multitude [a great number, a large amount] of men [people, individuals] and livestock [cattle, animals] within it [in its midst, surrounded by]. word study 5 For I will be [a surrounding barrier of protection] a wall of fire around it, declares the LORD [Yehovah, the self-existent God], and I will be [dwelling in the midst] the glory within it [in the center, the midst of her].’” word study 6 “Get up [arise, come forth]! Get up! Flee [run away, escape] from the land [region, territory] of the north [the direction of darkness and cold],” declares [says, speaks] the LORD [Yehovah, the covenant God], “for I have scattered [dispersed, spread abroad] you like [as, similar to] the four winds [directions, breezes] of heaven [the sky],” declares [says, speaks] the LORD. word study 7 “Get up [arise, be delivered], O Zion [the city of God, the people of God]! Escape [flee, save yourself], you who dwell [live, reside] with the Daughter of Babylon [the world system, a place of spiritual captivity]!” word study 8 For this is what the LORD [the supreme Ruler, Yehovah] of Hosts [the armies of heaven] says: “After His Glory [the divine Presence, honor] has sent Me against the nations [Gentile peoples, heathen] that have plundered [robbed, spoiled] you—for whoever touches [harms, mistreats] you touches [afflicts, hurts] the apple [pupil, most sensitive part] of His eye [the center of His care, attention]— word study 9 I [the prophetic messenger] will surely wave My hand [in judgment, with authority] over them, so that they will become plunder [a spoil, prey] for their own servants [those who once served them]. Then you will know [be aware, understand] that the LORD [Yehovah, the Lord of Israel] of Hosts [the commander of angelic armies] has sent Me [as His messenger, ambassador].” word study 10 “Shout for joy [sing and rejoice] and be glad [celebrate], O Daughter of Zion [people of Jerusalem], for I am coming [lo, I come] to dwell [live, make my resting-place] among you [in the midst of thee],” declares [says, utters] the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God]. word study 11 “On that day [at the appointed time, in the future era] many nations [people groups, Gentile countries] will join themselves [unite, become one] to the LORD [Yehovah, the covenant God], and they will become [be reckoned as, counted among] My people [My own, My chosen]. I will dwell [reside, live among] among you, and you will know [recognize, understand] that the LORD [the Commander, the Sovereign] of Hosts [the armies of heaven, the heavenly forces] has sent Me to you. word study 12 And the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God] will take possession [inherit, acquire as a legacy] of Judah [the tribe, the people] as His portion [heritage, allotted share] in the Holy Land [the sanctified country, the promised territory], and He will once again [yet, another time] choose [select, elect] Jerusalem [the city of God’s presence, the capital]. word study 13 Be silent [still, quiet] before the LORD [Yehovah, the covenant God], all people [flesh, humanity], for [because, since] He has roused [awakened, risen up] Himself from His holy [set apart, sacred] dwelling [habitation, place of residence].” word study
