Context — God’s Covenant with David
5For I have not dwelt in a house from the day I brought Israel up out of Egypt until this day, but I have moved from tent to tent and dwelling to dwelling.
6In all My journeys with all the Israelites, have I ever asked any of the leaders I appointed to shepherd My people, ‘Why haven’t you built Me a house of cedar?’ 7Now then, you are to tell My servant David that this is what the LORD of Hosts says: I took you from the pasture, from following the flock, to be the ruler over My people Israel.Cross References

1 Chronicles 17:5 Summary
In this verse, God is reminding David that He doesn't need a fancy house or temple to be with His people. God has been with the Israelites from the time they left Egypt, and He has been guiding them and providing for them wherever they went (as seen in Exodus 13:21-22). This means that God is not limited by physical buildings or structures, and He can be with us anywhere, at any time (as Jesus says in Matthew 28:20). God wants us to trust Him and follow Him, no matter where He leads us.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does God mean by 'I have not dwelt in a house' in this verse?
God is emphasizing that He has not required a permanent structure to dwell among His people, as seen in Exodus 25:8 where He instructed Moses to build the tabernacle, a portable place of worship.
Is God saying that He does not want a house or temple built for Him?
Not exactly, as later in 1 Chronicles 28:10-19, David's son Solomon is instructed to build the temple, but here God is explaining to David that His presence is not limited to a physical building, as also mentioned in Acts 7:48-49.
What is the significance of God moving 'from tent to tent and dwelling to dwelling'?
This phrase highlights God's presence and guidance throughout Israel's history, from the wilderness wanderings to the present day, demonstrating His faithfulness and care for His people, as seen in Psalm 78:52-53.
How does this verse relate to God's relationship with David?
This verse is part of God's message to David, explaining that God's plans and presence are not limited by human structures or expectations, and that David's role is to trust and follow God, as expressed in Psalm 23:1-4.
