1 Chronicles 2:48 Summary

This verse tells us about Caleb's concubine Maacah and her children, Sheber and Tirhanah. It's a reminder that the Bible is interested in telling us about all sorts of people, not just the famous ones (see also 1 Corinthians 1:26-31). The fact that Maacah is mentioned by name shows that God values and remembers every person, no matter their status or position (as seen in verses like Psalm 138:8). By including these details, the Bible gives us a glimpse into the everyday lives of people in the Old Testament, and helps us understand the importance of family and relationships in God's plan (see also Ephesians 3:15).

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does the Bible mention Caleb's concubines and their children?

The Bible mentions Caleb's concubines and their children to provide a complete genealogy of the tribe of Judah, as seen in 1 Chronicles 2:48 and other verses in the chapter. This is important for understanding the family lines and inheritance in the Old Testament (see also Genesis 25:1-4).

Who was Maacah, and why is she mentioned in the Bible?

Maacah was one of Caleb's concubines, and she is mentioned in the Bible as the mother of Sheber and Tirhanah, according to 1 Chronicles 2:48. Her mention in the biblical record highlights the importance of women in the genealogies of the Old Testament (see also Genesis 11:29).

What can we learn from the fact that Caleb had concubines?

The fact that Caleb had concubines, as mentioned in 1 Chronicles 2:46 and 48, shows that even godly men like Caleb were not immune to the cultural practices of their time. However, the Bible also emphasizes the importance of faithfulness and loyalty in marriage, as seen in verses like Malachi 2:14-15.

How does this verse relate to the larger story of the Bible?

This verse is part of the larger story of the Bible, which tells the story of God's relationship with his people, including the tribe of Judah. The genealogy in 1 Chronicles 2 helps to establish the family lines that will eventually lead to the birth of Jesus Christ, as prophesied in verses like Genesis 49:10.

The key to it appears to be the assumption that it is an ancient record of the relations between certain great branches of the tribe of Judah, and their various settlements; in other words, these lists are tribal and topographical, rather than genealogical.
