1 Kings 1:17 Summary
[This verse tells us about a promise King David made to his wife Bathsheba, saying their son Solomon would be the next king, which is similar to the promises God makes to us, as seen in Jeremiah 29:11. Bathsheba reminds David of this promise because another son of David, Adonijah, is trying to become king instead. This shows us the importance of remembering and trusting in God's promises, just like Bathsheba did, and how we can apply that to our own lives, as encouraged in Psalm 119:49-50.]
Frequently Asked Questions
What was the nature of the promise King David made to Bathsheba about their son Solomon?
King David had sworn to Bathsheba by the Lord his God that Solomon would reign after him and sit on his throne, as we see in this verse, a promise that was likely made when Solomon was born, as hinted in 2 Samuel 12:24-25.
Why did Bathsheba remind King David of his promise?
Bathsheba reminded King David of his promise because Adonijah, another son of David, had begun to take steps to become king, which threatened the fulfillment of David's promise to her, as seen in the following verses, 1 Kings 1:18-19.
What role does the name of the Lord play in this verse?
The name of the Lord is invoked as the basis of the oath that King David made to Bathsheba, indicating the seriousness and sacredness of the promise, similar to how oaths were made in other biblical contexts, such as in Deuteronomy 6:13 and Jeremiah 12:16.
How does this verse demonstrate the character of Bathsheba?
This verse shows Bathsheba as a woman who is aware of the promise of God through her husband and is not afraid to remind him of it, demonstrating her faith and her desire to see God's will fulfilled, much like other women of faith in the Bible, such as Hannah in 1 Samuel 1:26-28.
