Context — The LORD Speaks to Elijah at Horeb
11Then the LORD said, “Go out and stand on the mountain before the LORD. Behold, the LORD is about to pass by.” And a great and mighty wind tore into the mountains and shattered the rocks before the LORD, but the LORD was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the LORD was not in the earthquake.
12After the earthquake there was a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire. And after the fire came a still, small voice. 13When Elijah heard it, he wrapped his face in his cloak and went out and stood at the mouth of the cave. Suddenly a voice came to him and said, “What are you doing here, Elijah?”Cross References

1 Kings 19:11 Summary
[This verse is telling us that God is about to do something big, and Elijah needs to get ready by standing on the mountain before the Lord. God is not just in the big, loud things like wind and earthquakes, but also in the quiet, still moments, as we see in Psalm 23:4. Elijah is learning to listen for God's voice, even when it's not loud or obvious, and we can do the same by being still and quiet before God, as encouraged in Isaiah 40:31.]
Frequently Asked Questions
Why did God tell Elijah to go out and stand on the mountain before the Lord?
God told Elijah to go out and stand on the mountain before the Lord so that Elijah could experience God's presence and power, as seen in the wind, earthquake, and fire that followed, and to prepare him for the still, small voice that would speak to him, similar to how God spoke to Moses in Exodus 33:18-23.
What does it mean that the Lord was not in the wind or the earthquake?
The fact that the Lord was not in the wind or the earthquake suggests that God's presence and power are not limited to dramatic natural events, but can also be found in the stillness and quiet, as seen in the still, small voice that spoke to Elijah after the wind, earthquake, and fire, reminiscent of the way God spoke to Elijah in 1 Kings 19:12.
Is this verse suggesting that God is not powerful or mighty?
No, this verse is not suggesting that God is not powerful or mighty, but rather that God's power and might are not always demonstrated in the same way, and that sometimes God speaks and works in quiet and subtle ways, as seen in the still, small voice that spoke to Elijah, and as promised in Isaiah 30:21.
How can I apply this verse to my own life and experience with God?
You can apply this verse to your own life by being open to experiencing God's presence and power in different ways, whether through dramatic events or quiet moments of reflection, and by listening for the still, small voice of God that speaks to you, as encouraged in Psalm 46:10 and Matthew 11:15.
