29he grew even more afraid of David. So from then on Saul was David’s enemy. 30Every time the Philistine commanders came out for battle, David was more successful than all of Saul’s officers, so that his name was highly esteemed.Cross References

1 Samuel 18:28 Summary
This verse, 1 Samuel 18:28, tells us that Saul realized that God was with David and that his daughter Michal loved David. This made Saul afraid of David because he knew that God's presence and favor were on his life, which is similar to how God was with Joseph in Genesis 39:2-3. Just like David, we can trust that God is always with us, guiding and protecting us, as promised in Matthew 28:20 and Hebrews 13:5. As we walk in God's ways, we can expect to face challenges and opposition, but we can also trust in God's goodness and sovereignty, just like David did, as seen in Psalm 37:3-7 and Proverbs 3:5-6.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why did Saul become afraid of David?
Saul became afraid of David because he realized that the Lord was with David, indicating God's favor and blessing on his life, as seen in 1 Samuel 18:28, and this made Saul feel threatened and insecure about his own position as king, similar to how King Nebuchadnezzar felt when he saw the handwriting on the wall in Daniel 5:5-6.
What role did Michal play in David's life?
Michal, Saul's daughter, played a significant role in David's life as his wife, and her love for David is mentioned in 1 Samuel 18:28, which shows that she was a source of support and comfort for him, much like how the Lord was a source of comfort for the Israelites in Deuteronomy 33:27.
How did Saul's perception of David change over time?
Initially, Saul saw David as a threat and tried to kill him, but as time passed, he became even more afraid of David, as stated in 1 Samuel 18:29, and this fear was rooted in his realization that the Lord was with David, as seen in 1 Samuel 18:28, which is similar to how the Philistines perceived the Israelites in 1 Samuel 4:7-9.
What does it mean that 'the Lord was with David'?
The phrase 'the Lord was with David' in 1 Samuel 18:28 means that God was guiding, protecting, and empowering David, which is a recurring theme throughout the Bible, such as in Genesis 28:15, where God promises to be with Jacob, and in Matthew 28:20, where Jesus promises to be with his disciples always, which is a source of comfort and strength for believers, as seen in Isaiah 41:10.
Reflection Questions
- What are some ways that I can recognize God's presence and favor in my own life, just like Saul recognized it in David's life?
- How can I, like Michal, be a source of support and love for those around me, especially those who are walking in God's ways?
- What are some areas in my life where I am trying to rely on my own strength and abilities, rather than trusting in God's presence and power, as seen in 1 Samuel 18:28 and Ephesians 6:10-18?
- In what ways can I, like David, trust in God's sovereignty and goodness, even when faced with difficult circumstances and opposition, as seen in Psalm 23:4 and Romans 8:28?
