2 Chronicles 6:42 Summary

[This verse is a prayer where King Solomon asks God not to reject him, but to remember the love and promises God made to his father David. God had made a covenant with David, promising to love and care for him and his descendants, as seen in 2 Samuel 7:12-16. Solomon is asking God to keep those promises and to stay close to him, just like God was with David. This reminds us that God is a faithful and loving God who keeps His promises, as also seen in Deuteronomy 7:9, and we can trust Him to be with us and guide us in our lives.]

Jamieson-Fausset-Brown on 2 Chronicles 6:42

O LORD God, turn not away the face of thine anointed: remember the mercies of David thy servant.

Matthew Poole's Commentary on 2 Chronicles 6:42

Of thine anointed, i.e. of me, who by thy command and appointment was anointed the king and ruler of thy people: do not deny my present requests, nor send me back from the throne of thy grace with a sad heart and dejected countenance. The mercies of David thy servant, i.e. those which thou hast promised to David and to his house for ever.

Trapp's Commentary on 2 Chronicles 6:42

2 Chronicles 6:42 O LORD God, turn not away the face of thine anointed: remember the mercies of David thy servant.Ver. 42. Remember the mercies of David.] Those "sure mercies"; that is, promises of mercy.

Ellicott's Commentary on 2 Chronicles 6:42

(42) O Lord God.—Not in the psalm. The temple invocation is used as in the priest’s blessing (Numbers 6:24-26). Turn not away the face of thine anointed—i.e., deny not his request (1 Kings 2:16). Psalms 132:10 :— “For the sake of David Thy servant, Turn not away the face of Thine Anointed.” The members of the couplet are transposed, and the language of the first is modified by the chronicler, so as to bring in the phrase, “the mercies of David,” that is, Jehovah’s mercies promised to David (Isaiah 55:3; Psalms 89:49). Remember (zokrâh)—Only here and five times in Nehemish.

Adam Clarke's Commentary on 2 Chronicles 6:42

Verse 42. Turn not away the face of thine anointed] "At least do me good; and if not for my sake, do it for thy own sake." - Jarchi. These two last verses are not in the parallel place in 1Kg 8:22-53. There are other differences between the two places in this prayer, but they are not of much consequence.

Cambridge Bible on 2 Chronicles 6:42

42. turn not away] Cp. Psalms 132:10. remember the mercies of David] i.e. either shew David’s son the mercies thou didst shew to David himself (Isaiah 55:3), or (better), remember the good deeds (“mercies”; cp. 2 Chronicles 32:32) which David did, and reward his son.
