2 Kings 23:34 Summary
This verse tells us about a time when the king of Judah, Jehoahaz, was taken away by the Pharaoh of Egypt, and a new king, Eliakim, was put in his place and given the name Jehoiakim. This shows how Judah had lost its independence and was under the control of a foreign power, much like what happened in the book of Exodus when the Israelites were slaves in Egypt. As believers, we can learn from this example about the importance of trusting in God and following His ways, rather than relying on our own strength or the power of others, as seen in Proverbs 3:5-6 and Psalms 20:7. By studying this verse, we can gain a deeper understanding of the consequences of sin and the importance of faithfulness to God.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why did Pharaoh Neco change Eliakim's name to Jehoiakim?
Pharaoh Neco changed Eliakim's name to Jehoiakim as a symbol of his authority over Judah, similar to how names were changed in other biblical accounts, such as Daniel 1:7, to signify a new identity or allegiance.
What happened to Jehoahaz after he was taken by Pharaoh Neco?
According to 2 Kings 23:34, after Pharaoh Neco took Jehoahaz, he carried him off to Egypt, where he eventually died, fulfilling the prophecy that Judah's kings would be taken captive by foreign rulers, as seen in Deuteronomy 28:25 and other passages.
Why did Pharaoh Neco impose a levy on Judah?
Pharaoh Neco imposed a levy on Judah, as mentioned in 2 Kings 23:33, likely as a means of exerting control and exacting tribute from the conquered nation, a common practice in ancient times, also seen in 1 Kings 14:25-26.
What can we learn from the example of Jehoiakim's installation as king?
The example of Jehoiakim's installation as king, with his name being changed by Pharaoh Neco, serves as a reminder of the consequences of disobedience and the loss of independence that can result from sin, as warned in Proverbs 14:34 and other scriptures.

- What are some areas in my life where I may be experiencing a kind of 'captivity' or oppression, similar to what happened to Jehoahaz, and how can I trust God to deliver me, as promised in Psalms 34:17-20?
- How can I balance the need to submit to authority, as seen in the relationship between Pharaoh Neco and Jehoiakim, with the need to remain loyal to God and His principles, as taught in Romans 13:1-7 and other passages?
