Deuteronomy 18:18 Summary
This verse is a promise from God that He will raise up a prophet to speak His words to His people. This prophet will be like Moses, who spoke God's words to the Israelites, and will tell them everything God commands. In simple terms, God is saying that He will always provide a way for His people to hear His voice and know His will, as seen in Isaiah 55:11 and Jeremiah 31:33. This is a comforting promise that reminds us that God is always speaking and guiding us, if we will only listen.
Frequently Asked Questions
Who is the prophet like Moses that God promises to raise up in Deuteronomy 18:18?
Many Christians believe this prophecy is fulfilled in Jesus Christ, who is considered the ultimate prophet and mediator between God and humanity, as seen in Hebrews 1:1-2 and John 1:1-14.
What does it mean for God to put His words in the prophet's mouth?
This means that the prophet will speak God's message, not his own, as seen in Jeremiah 1:9 where God touches Jeremiah's mouth and gives him the words to speak.
How does this verse relate to the concept of prophetic authority?
This verse establishes that the prophet's authority comes from God, and that his words are to be obeyed as if they were God's own words, as seen in Deuteronomy 18:19.
Is this verse only referring to a specific prophet in the Old Testament or does it have a broader application?
While the immediate context suggests a prophet like Moses, the New Testament sees Jesus Christ as the fulfillment of this prophecy, and thus it has a broader application to all of God's people who are called to proclaim His message, as seen in Acts 3:22-23 and Acts 7:37.
