| 1 | Deuteronomy 2:9 | Then the LORD said to me, “Do not harass the Moabites or provoke them to war, for I will not give you any of their land, because I have given Ar to the descendants of Lot as their possession.” |
| 2 | Judges 11:13–27 | The king of the Ammonites answered Jephthah’s messengers, “When Israel came up out of Egypt, they seized my land, from the Arnon to the Jabbok and all the way to the Jordan. Now, therefore, restore it peaceably.” Jephthah again sent messengers to the king of the Ammonites to tell him, “This is what Jephthah says: Israel did not take away the land of Moab or of the Ammonites. But when Israel came up out of Egypt, they traveled through the wilderness to the Red Sea and came to Kadesh. Then Israel sent messengers to the king of Edom, saying, ‘Please let us pass through your land,’ but the king of Edom would not listen. They also sent messengers to the king of Moab, but he would not consent. So Israel stayed in Kadesh. Then Israel traveled through the wilderness and bypassed the lands of Edom and Moab. They came to the east side of the land of Moab and camped on the other side of the Arnon. But they did not enter the territory of Moab, since the Arnon was its border. And Israel sent messengers to Sihon king of the Amorites, who ruled in Heshbon, and said to him, ‘Please let us pass through your land into our own place.’ But Sihon would not trust Israel to pass through his territory. So he gathered all his people, encamped in Jahaz, and fought with Israel. Then the LORD, the God of Israel, delivered Sihon and all his people into the hand of Israel, who defeated them. So Israel took possession of all the land of the Amorites who inhabited that country, seizing all the land from the Arnon to the Jabbok and from the wilderness to the Jordan. Now since the LORD, the God of Israel, has driven out the Amorites from before His people Israel, should you now possess it? Do you not possess whatever your god Chemosh grants you? So also, we possess whatever the LORD our God has granted us. Are you now so much better than Balak son of Zippor, king of Moab? Did he ever contend with Israel or fight against them? For three hundred years Israel has lived in Heshbon, Aroer, and their villages, as well as all the cities along the banks of the Arnon. Why did you not take them back during that time? I have not sinned against you, but you have done me wrong by waging war against me. May the LORD, the Judge, decide today between the Israelites and the Ammonites.” |

Deuteronomy 2:19 Summary
This verse is telling us that when the Israelites were getting close to the land of the Ammonites, they were not to bother them or try to take their land, because God had already given it to the Ammonites as their own possession. This is similar to how God had given the Israelites their own land, as promised in Genesis 12:7. It's a reminder that God is in control of all the nations and lands, and He gives and takes away according to His own will, as seen in Psalm 24:1. We can trust in God's goodness and wisdom, even when we don't understand why He does things a certain way.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why were the Israelites instructed not to harass the Ammonites?
The Israelites were instructed not to harass the Ammonites because God had given the land of the Ammonites to the descendants of Lot as their possession, as seen in Deuteronomy 2:19. This is similar to how God had given the land of Canaan to the Israelites, as promised in Genesis 12:7 and Exodus 6:4.
Who were the descendants of Lot and why did they receive the land of the Ammonites?
The descendants of Lot were the Ammonites themselves, who were the product of an incestuous relationship between Lot and his daughters, as recorded in Genesis 19:30-38. God gave them the land as their possession, just as He had given the Israelites their own land, demonstrating His sovereignty over all nations.
What can we learn from God's instructions to the Israelites regarding the Ammonites?
We can learn that God is a God of boundaries and sovereignty, who gives and takes away according to His will, as seen in Job 12:23 and Psalm 24:1. This should prompt us to trust in His goodness and wisdom, even when we do not understand His ways.
How does this verse relate to the concept of God's election and sovereignty?
This verse highlights God's sovereignty in choosing to give the land of the Ammonites to the descendants of Lot, just as He had chosen the Israelites to be His special people, as seen in Deuteronomy 7:6 and Romans 9:13. This demonstrates that God's choices are not based on human merit, but on His own sovereign will and purpose.
