Context — Water from the Rock
5And the LORD said to Moses, “Walk on ahead of the people and take some of the elders of Israel with you. Take along in your hand the staff with which you struck the Nile, and go.
6Behold, I will stand there before you by the rock at Horeb. And when you strike the rock, water will come out of it for the people to drink.” So Moses did this in the sight of the elders of Israel. 7He named the place Massah and Meribah because the Israelites quarreled, and because they tested the LORD, saying, “Is the LORD among us or not?”Cross References

| 1 | Exodus 7:19–20 | And the LORD said to Moses, “Tell Aaron, ‘Take your staff and stretch out your hand over the waters of Egypt—over their rivers and canals and ponds and reservoirs—that they may become blood.’ There will be blood throughout the land of Egypt, even in the vessels of wood and stone.” Moses and Aaron did just as the LORD had commanded; in the presence of Pharaoh and his officials, Aaron raised the staff and struck the water of the Nile, and all the water was turned to blood. |
| 2 | Numbers 20:8–11 | “Take the staff and assemble the congregation. You and your brother Aaron are to speak to the rock while they watch, and it will pour out its water. You will bring out water from the rock and provide drink for the congregation and their livestock.” So Moses took the staff from the LORD’s presence, just as he had been commanded. Then Moses and Aaron gathered the assembly in front of the rock, and Moses said to them, “Listen now, you rebels, must we bring you water out of this rock?” Then Moses raised his hand and struck the rock twice with his staff, so that a great amount of water gushed out, and the congregation and their livestock were able to drink. |
| 3 | Acts 20:23–24 | I only know that in town after town the Holy Spirit warns me that chains and afflictions await me. But I consider my life of no value to me, if only I may finish my course and complete the ministry I have received from the Lord Jesus—the ministry of testifying to the good news of God’s grace. |
| 4 | Ezekiel 2:6 | But you, son of man, do not be afraid of them or their words. Do not be afraid, though briers and thorns surround you, and you dwell among scorpions. Do not be afraid of their words or dismayed by their presence, though they are a rebellious house. |
Exodus 17:5 Summary
In this verse, God tells Moses to walk ahead of the people and take his staff, which was used to perform miracles in the past, like turning the Nile into blood, as seen in Exodus 7:20. God is teaching Moses to trust Him and have faith, even when the people are grumbling and thirsty, as seen in Exodus 17:3-4. This reminds us that God is always with us, just like He was with Moses, and He will provide for our needs, as seen in Matthew 6:25-34 and Philippians 4:19. By trusting God and following His instructions, we can see His power and provision in our own lives, just like Moses did in this verse, and as promised in Jeremiah 29:11 and Romans 8:28.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why did God tell Moses to take the staff with which he struck the Nile?
God instructed Moses to take the staff as a reminder of His power and previous miracles, such as turning the Nile into blood, as seen in Exodus 7:20. This staff would be used again to demonstrate God's power in providing water for the people.
What is the significance of taking some of the elders of Israel with Moses?
The elders were taken along to witness God's provision and power, and to testify to the people, as seen in Exodus 17:6. This is similar to how Moses' assistants were used in Exodus 24:1-14 to help with leadership and witness God's glory.
How does this verse relate to the people's thirst and grumbling in the previous verses?
This verse is a direct response to the people's thirst and grumbling, as seen in Exodus 17:3-4. God is providing a solution to their problem, demonstrating His care and provision for His people, as promised in Exodus 16:4.
What can we learn from God's instruction to Moses to 'walk on ahead of the people'?
This instruction teaches us about the importance of leadership and faith, as seen in Exodus 13:21-22 and Numbers 27:17. Moses is called to trust God and lead the people, even when the way ahead is uncertain, demonstrating God's guidance and care, as promised in Isaiah 58:11.
Reflection Questions
- What are some ways I can apply the lesson of trusting God's provision in my own life, just as Moses did in this verse?
- How can I, like Moses, demonstrate faith and leadership in the face of uncertainty or adversity, as seen in Exodus 14:13-14 and Hebrews 11:27?
- What are some 'staffs' in my life that remind me of God's power and previous miracles, and how can I use them to trust Him more fully, as seen in Psalm 77:10-12 and Isaiah 46:9?
- In what ways can I, like the elders of Israel, be a witness to God's power and provision in my own community, as seen in Matthew 5:16 and Acts 4:20?
