Exodus 32:7 Summary
This verse is telling us that the people of Israel, who had been rescued by God from slavery in Egypt, had quickly turned away from God and started sinning against Him. They had made a false idol and were worshiping it, which is like putting something else in the place of God in our lives, as warned in Exodus 20:3-4. This is a reminder that we all have the tendency to turn away from God and towards sin, but God is always calling us back to Himself, as seen in Romans 3:23 and 1 John 1:9. We must be careful not to let sin 'corrupt' us, and instead choose to follow God's ways, as encouraged in Psalm 119:1-3 and Matthew 22:37-40.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why did God tell Moses that the people he brought up out of Egypt had corrupted themselves?
God told Moses this because the people had quickly turned away from His commands and had made an idol for themselves, as seen in Exodus 32:8, which is a clear violation of the first commandment in Exodus 20:3-4.
What does it mean that the people 'corrupted themselves'?
When it says the people 'corrupted themselves', it means they allowed sin to enter their hearts and lives, leading them away from God's ways, similar to what happened in Genesis 6:11-12 when the earth was corrupted before the flood.
Is this verse suggesting that Moses was responsible for the people's corruption?
No, this verse is not saying Moses was responsible for the corruption, but rather that the people he led out of Egypt had chosen to sin against God, despite Moses' leadership and God's provision, as seen in Deuteronomy 9:24 and Numbers 14:11.
How does this event relate to the broader story of the Israelites' journey?
This event is a pivotal moment in the Israelites' journey, as it reveals their tendency to quickly forget God's commands and provision, and instead turn to idolatry, which is a theme that continues throughout the Old Testament, such as in Judges 2:10-13 and 1 Kings 11:1-8.
Reflection Questions
- What are some ways that I, like the Israelites, may be 'corrupting' myself by turning away from God's commands and provision?
- How can I, like Moses, remain faithful to God even when those around me are turning away from Him, as seen in Exodus 32:26-28?
- What are some 'idols' in my life that I may be putting before God, and how can I remove them, as commanded in Exodus 20:3-4?
- In what ways can I remember and reflect on God's provision and commands in my life, so as not to forget them like the Israelites did, as warned in Deuteronomy 8:11-14?
