Context — The Soul Who Sins Will Die
22None of the transgressions he has committed will be held against him. Because of the righteousness he has practiced, he will live.
23Do I take any pleasure in the death of the wicked? declares the Lord GOD. Wouldn’t I prefer that he turn from his ways and live? 24But if a righteous man turns from his righteousness and practices iniquity, committing the same abominations as the wicked, will he live? None of the righteous acts he did will be remembered. Because of the unfaithfulness and sin he has committed, he will die.Cross References

Ezekiel 18:22 Summary
[This verse, Ezekiel 18:22, tells us that when someone turns away from their sins and starts living a righteous life, God will not hold their past sins against them. This is a beautiful picture of God's mercy and forgiveness, as seen in Psalm 103:12, where it says that God removes our sins from us as far as the east is from the west. It means that we can start fresh and have a new beginning, living a life that honors God and brings us joy and peace. As we see in Jeremiah 29:11, God's plan for us is to prosper us, not to harm us, and to give us a hope and a future.]
Frequently Asked Questions
What happens to the sins of someone who turns to God and starts living righteously?
According to Ezekiel 18:22, none of the transgressions they committed will be held against them, and because of their newfound righteousness, they will live. This is similar to what Psalm 103:12 says, that God removes our sins from us as far as the east is from the west.
Does this mean that God forgets our past sins?
While God does not forget our past sins in the sense that He is all-knowing, He does choose not to hold them against us when we turn to Him in repentance, as seen in Ezekiel 18:22 and supported by Jeremiah 31:34, which says that God will remember our sins no more.
How can someone who has been living a wicked life start living righteously?
Ezekiel 18:21 provides the answer, saying that if the wicked man turns from all his sins, keeps all God's statutes, and does what is just and right, he will surely live. This is also echoed in Proverbs 28:13, which says that whoever conceals their sins will not prosper, but whoever confesses and renounces them will find mercy.
What is the ultimate goal of God in forgiving our sins and giving us new life?
As stated in Ezekiel 18:23, God takes no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but rather desires that they turn from their ways and live, which aligns with John 3:16, where God's love for the world is demonstrated through the gift of His Son, Jesus Christ.
